The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology confirmed on the evening of September 12 that an earthquake had just shaken the northern region of the country.
The announcement said the earthquake occurred at 19:03 on September 12 (local time) with a temporary magnitude determined at about 6.4.
The epicenter of the earthquake was 10km deep in Calayan town, 26km northwest of Dalupiri island.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake was followed by aftershocks but would not cause damage.
People in many areas on the main island of Luzon and the central Philippines could feel the earthquake shaking .
Located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Philippines is regularly hit by earthquakes and tropical storms. In October 2013, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the island of Bohol in the central Philippines, killing more than 200 people.
Previously, in 1990, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in the northern Philippines killed more than 1,200 people./.
