On March 5, information from Hoan My Dong Nai Hospital, doctors at the hospital just performed surgery to remove a foreign object, a large coin, to help a 5-year-old boy.
The boy swallowed a large coin.
According to the family, the boy had accidentally swallowed a coin while at school. Upon discovering the incident, the teacher immediately notified the parents and the family quickly took the boy to the hospital.
The baby was admitted to the hospital in a state of discomfort, feeling stuck in the chest, and in a state of panic. The doctor examined him and ordered an X-ray. The X-ray image showed a round, radiopaque foreign body in the esophagus. The doctor then ordered an exploratory gastroscopy. The endoscopy discovered a metal coin about 2.5cm in diameter stuck in the lower third of the esophagus, close to the pylorus.
The doctor then used specialized forceps to remove the foreign object, and fortunately the foreign object was quickly removed.
Doctors recommend that to prevent dangerous situations like the ones above, parents and caregivers must observe children while they are eating and playing. Do not let children hold or play with small objects that can be swallowed, such as coins, screws, nails, batteries, marbles, etc.
If you discover or suspect that your child has swallowed a foreign object, take the child immediately to a medical facility equipped with anesthesia endoscopy for timely treatment.
