During the 3-day Choul Chnam Thmey traditional New Year in 2025, from April 14-16, Cambodia welcomed nearly 24 million domestic and international tourists, marking a 9.9% increase over the same period last year, setting a new record for the number of tourists visiting the country during the traditional New Year.

According to a report by the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism , the total number of tourists traveling to the country during the recent Cambodian New Year included about 23.86 million domestic tourists and about 115,000 international tourists.

The report highlighted a steady increase in visitor numbers during the traditional Tet holiday, with 5,685,223 tourists recorded on the first day, 8,365,724 on the second day and 9,926,494 on the last day of the holiday.

According to a report by the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism, the capital Phnom Penh topped the list of destinations, welcoming more than 2.86 million visitors, followed by Siem Reap province in northwestern Cambodia with about 2.75 million people, Kampong Cham province with 2.74 million visitors, Prey Veng province with nearly 2.4 million visitors and Battambang province with 1.74 million visitors.

The Ministry of Tourism said Cambodia was able to welcome this record high number of visitors thanks to the many events and programs of the “Sangkranta” (also known as Sangkran or Songkran) festival in 2025 held nationwide, along with the country’s stable and peaceful environment, which encourages safe tourism activities and worry-free visitors.

The Cambodian Ministry of Tourism has stressed that this surge in tourism has generated significant economic benefits at both the national and local levels. Hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, food courts, and tourist resorts in almost all provinces are at or near full capacity. The private sector has expressed strong optimism about the future of Cambodia’s tourism industry, which is clearly on the right track.

In particular, during the recent holiday, at the famous Angkor Wat temple complex in Siem Reap province, the Angkor Sangkranta 2025 event with the theme "Smiles to Welcome the New Year Sangkranta" became a highlight to attract tourists, becoming a new driving force to promote the development of tourism types in the country of pagodas, including cultural, traditional, historical and natural tourism, thereby contributing to the economic growth of this Southeast Asian country.

Through a series of dense events arranged in areas recreating folk games, traditional art performances, unique art performances with grand scenes recreating historical events, art forms and unique customs of Cambodia, the Angkor Sangkranta 2025 event also contributes to preserving and honoring the cultural, traditional customs and achievements of Khmer ancestors in many forms.

Thereby, the event attracted a large number of domestic and international tourists to enjoy and enthusiastically participate in exciting entertainment activities in the hot month of April, in the atmosphere of welcoming the New Year in the land of the wonder Angkor Wat.

In the capital city of Phnom Penh, the Sangkranta festival and entertainment programs are held in many areas, with the highlight being the famous spiritual tourist attraction Wat Phnom, along with the bustling "Sangkranta New Year" program, called "Wat Phnom Sangkranta."

During Tet, water splashing and water shooting activities are common in most localities surrounding the areas where Sangkranta is held.

Choul Chnam Thmey is considered the biggest festival of the year in the Kingdom of Cambodia - a country with more than 5,100 pagodas, with over 90% of the total population of about 17 million being Buddhists. During the traditional New Year, Cambodians prepare offerings to go to pagodas and perform traditional rituals.

During Cambodia's traditional New Year celebrations in 2024, the country welcomed about 21.81 million domestic and international tourists./.
