Early morning of July 19, the Ministry of Education and Training received official information about the results of the Vietnamese national delegation participating in the 66th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 2025, held in Sunshine Coast city, Queensland state, Australia. All 6/6 students in the delegation won medals. Specifically:

Vo Trong Khai - a 12th grade student at Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted ( Nghe An ) - won a gold medal.

Tran Minh Hoang - 12th grade student of Ha Tinh High School for the Gifted ( Ha Tinh ) - won the gold medal.

Nguyen Dang Dung - a 12th grade student at the High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences (University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi) - won a silver medal.

Nguyen Dinh Tung - 11th grade student of High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences (University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi) - won a silver medal.

Le Phan Duc Man - 12th grade student at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted (HCMC) - won a silver medal.

Truong Thanh Xuan - 11th grade student of Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted (Bac Ninh) - won a bronze medal.

This year, the Vietnamese delegation had the participation of students from the three regions of North, Central and South. Notably, the delegation had a female student in grade 11 participating and excellently winning a bronze medal, that was Truong Thanh Xuan.

With a total score of 188, the Vietnamese delegation ranked 9th out of 113 countries and territories participating in this year's competition. The Vietnamese delegation ranked after the following delegations: China (1st place), the US (2nd), South Korea (3rd), Poland and Japan (tied for 4th place), Israel (6th), India (7th), Singapore (8th).

Compared to the results of the Vietnamese delegation in 2024 (winning 2 silver medals, 3 bronze medals and 1 certificate of merit), the achievements of the Vietnamese delegation this year have clearly made a breakthrough. In 2024, the Vietnamese delegation ranked 33rd out of 108 countries and territories participating in the competition.

The 2025 International Mathematical Olympiad exam has 6 problems: 2 arithmetic problems, 2 combinatorial problems, 1 geometry problem and 1 algebra problem (requiring combinatorial thinking). This shows the tendency of this year's exam to focus on combinatorial content.

Notably, the only geometry problem in the exam proposed by Vietnam was authored by Mr. Tran Quang Hung - a teacher at the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences (University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi).

This is the fourth time in the history of the International Mathematical Olympiad that Vietnam has had a problem selected for the official exam. Previously, there were 3 problems proposed by scholars in Vietnam that were used by the competition's organizing committee in the official exam, namely the 1977 exam (problem of scholar Phan Duc Chinh), 1982 (problem of scholar Van Nhu Cuong) and 1987 (problem of scholar Nguyen Minh Duc).

The 66th International Mathematical Olympiad was held from July 10 to 20 in Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia, with the participation of 639 contestants from 113 delegations representing countries and territories. This is the second time Australia has hosted the International Mathematical Olympiad, the first time in 1988.

The total number of medals awarded at this year's competition includes 72 gold medals, 104 silver medals and 145 bronze medals.
