After the consolidation of tourism space in each province and city in the Mekong Delta, it has been expanded. Inter-regional and intra-provincial connections are more flexible and effective, making it easier to build tours and routes, bringing tourists a fresher and more attractive image of the Mekong Delta. Zoning not only avoids overlapping products but also creates favorable conditions for developing more specialized and systematic tourism to attract tourists.

“Tourism in the Mekong Delta after the merger is more attractive not only because of the scenery but also because of the optimization of logistics and services. Previous inter-provincial tours have now become intra-provincial tours, helping to shorten travel time, save costs; tourists have better experiences, more comfort...”, said Mr. Tran Van Tam - Deputy Director of a travel company in An Giang .

Although the provinces and cities of the Mekong Delta focus on linking and cooperating to develop tourism, there is still a situation of “each doing their own thing” leading to disjointedness and lack of connectivity. Therefore, tourism products in this region overlap, lack depth and cause difficulties for businesses in building inter-provincial tours.

In addition, the limited transport infrastructure and smart tourism services, and weak tourism human resources affect the experience of tourists. In particular, after the merger, the management of a large and culturally diverse area requires a streamlined, professional management and operation apparatus and a strategic vision so that the colorful tourism of the Mekong Delta must be harmonious and cohesive...

Dr. Tran Huu Hiep - Vice President of the Mekong Delta Tourism Association said that tourism products in the West mainly rely on nature, exploit existing values, and lack connectivity. He pointed out three weaknesses of tourism in this region: poor tourism infrastructure, weak tourism human resources, and lack of effective regional coordination and linkage mechanisms for the tourism value chain.

Mr. Nguyen Minh Duc - a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City shared: “My family traveled to Can Tho and then to Ha Tien. The destinations were all wonderful, however, traveling from Can Tho to Ha Tien was not a good experience due to the lack of synchronous traffic connections between the provinces. If the traffic could be improved soon, the tourists' trip would be more complete.”

Mekong Delta tourism has high expectations after provincial merger.

Tourism experts affirm that the province's merger is an opportunity to reorganize the tourism industry in a more professional direction. However, to develop sustainable tourism in the Mekong Delta, it is necessary to synchronously deploy many strategic solutions such as investing in developing modern and synchronous tourism infrastructure from improving the inter-regional transport system; applying digital technology in destination management, smart guidance and tourism promotion; positioning and developing unique tourism products associated with preserving and promoting regional cultural identity; enhancing regional tourism promotion and advertising...

In particular, human resource training through training courses, training tourism human resources according to international standards, focusing on foreign languages, service skills and behavioral culture. In addition, it is necessary to build and strengthen the coordination mechanism between provinces and cities through association councils and common information systems to create unity in tourism product development. It is the close coordination between localities that promotes the combined strength, enhances the position and tourism brand of the Mekong Delta region, opens up many opportunities to attract domestic and foreign tourists...

Dr. Nguyen Huu Hiep affirmed that Mekong Delta tourism needs a “conductor” to coordinate so that products do not overlap and tourism linkages can promote their overall strength. The linkage work for tourism development outside the government needs to focus on market linkages, linkages between businesses and media agencies, promoting tourism images and brands in the direction of developing value chains, specific tourism products, etc., thereby clearly assigning tasks in linkages, promoting advantages, overcoming limitations, sharing benefits, and developing sustainably.

Director of the Department of Tourism Bui Quoc Thai said that the change of administrative boundaries opens up strategic restructuring opportunities, allowing localities to more easily coordinate in managing tourism resources, connecting infrastructure and organizing synchronous tours and routes, thereby creating a continuous, attractive and sustainable tourism value chain.

To better promote the advantages and opportunities after the province's merger, the Mekong Delta region needs to review the goals, tasks and solutions for tourism development in the province's master plan for socio-economic development in the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, to develop a plan to implement the province's tourism development plan...
