Phu Quoc tourism is increasingly declining, tourists are turning away, forcing local officials and businesses to sit down to discuss ways to save it.
To save the island, we must find the cause and make the right diagnosis. Wrong diagnosis will lead to wrong and ineffective solutions. Local managers and businesses believe that this is because the airfare to the island is higher than other places.
Ticket prices have been increasing steadily, not just in Phu Quoc. This factor is only a part, not the main reason leading to the current sharp decline in Phu Quoc tourism market.
If we only "blame" the airfare, meaning someone else is wrong, and Phu Quoc is still right, then Phu Quoc tourism will continue to decline, and it will be difficult to save it.
There is one thing that any tourist can see, feel indignant, and react to: Phu Quoc is full of garbage. The garbage is horrifying, frightening. Roads and canals are full of garbage, diners cannot swallow because they see piles of garbage all around. Urban management at such a level is the fastest way to kill the tourism industry without competitors having to intervene.
People litter everywhere, tourists litter carelessly, restaurants and eateries also freely litter and discharge all kinds of waste. The whole island city is flooded with garbage, it is due to poor management, there is no need to say anything more.
According to the research report in the period 2020-2023 of the Ocean Plastic Waste Reduction Project between the Department of Seas and Islands ( Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment ) and the Vietnam International Organization for Conservation of Nature, Phu Quoc generates about 190 tons of solid waste every day, 89% of which is collected and treated by two methods: landfill and incineration at 6 centralized landfills. With such a large amount of waste every day, if not collected and treated properly, waste and environmental pollution are inevitable.
Who dares to travel and relax in a place full of trash?
Fear of garbage, plus overcharging, makes tourists feel discouraged. Overcharging is rampant, creating an unfriendly environment, considering tourists as "prey", only lurking to "eat". Tourists are charged extortionate prices, of course they do not want to come again, that is the loss of customers that short-term business people do not see.
Just clean up the trash, turn Phu Quoc into a clean, pristine, green island, then not only domestic but also international tourists will come to visit even if the airfare is expensive. Go to Jeju Island - Korea to learn how people clean the environment.
Being friendly to tourists and not doing business in a snatch-and-grab manner is the secret to tourism development.
