Persimmon orchards - a specialty fruit at the foot of Dai Hue mountain in Nam Anh commune, Nam Dan district, Nghe An province - are famous for their unique flavor that cannot be found anywhere else. This year, persimmon prices have reached a record high. However, persimmon production has decreased, making many people sad.

At the foot of Dai Hue Mountain in Nam Anh Commune, Nam Dan District, Nghe An Province, there are ancient rose gardens famous for their unique scent that cannot be found anywhere else. Rose trees have been grown in Nam Anh Commune for generations. There are two main types of roses here: rose apple and egg rose apple. At this time, people are also harvesting rose apples.

Speaking to Dan Viet reporter, Mr. Ho Viet Hoa - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Nam Anh Commune, Nam Dan District, Nghe An Province said that since the beginning of the season, persimmons in the commune have been purchased at very high prices. Specifically, soaked persimmons (soaked persimmons) are being sold at 25,000 VND to 30,000 VND/kg. Meanwhile, egg persimmons cost more than 40,000 VND/kg.

For persimmons in Nam Anh commune, this is a very high price. However, although the price of persimmons has been high since the beginning of the season, many families have no fruit to sell. The reason is that this year the persimmon crop in Nam Anh commune has been severely poor.

This year, persimmons in Nam Anh commune, Nam Dan district, Nghe An province have reached a record high price. But people still have nothing to sell.

"When the persimmon tree flowers and bears fruit, there are many. However, when the persimmons develop and reach the size of a thumb, they fall off in large numbers. Only a few fruits develop until they are ready to be harvested. The phenomenon of persimmons falling off in large numbers at a sensitive time is the main cause of crop failure," Mr. Hoa shared.

According to the Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Nam Anh Commune, this is not the first time the largest persimmon orchard in Nghe An province has experienced this phenomenon. For many years now, the phenomenon of persimmons falling en masse has occurred. A research team from the Institute of Agricultural Sciences has also come here to survey, but has yet to find the cause.

The entire Nam Anh commune has nearly 200 hectares of persimmon trees. Of these, about 150 hectares are in the harvest period, the rest is newly planted area. This year, the total persimmon output of the commune only reached nearly 100 tons.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Que’s family (residing in Nam Anh commune) shared that in previous years, the persimmon garden yielded nearly 1.5 tons of fruit. But this year, the whole garden only yielded about 400kg. Therefore, although the price of persimmons is high, the income is not much.

Ms. Mai's family has 60 persimmon trees, and this year they also suffered a severe crop failure. "This is the second consecutive year that the persimmon trees have had a bad crop. We also don't understand why when the persimmons are as big as a fingertip, they fall off a lot. It could be due to weather conditions, heavy rains that affect the tree's roots, leading to the tree not having enough nutrients to nourish the fruit, causing a lot of fruit to fall off. In addition, some harmful insects are thriving, causing a lot of persimmons to fall off," Ms. Mai shared.

The crop failure not only directly affects people's income but also affects many families who buy and process persimmons. Ms. Tran Hoa (residing in Nam Anh commune) shared: "This year, the persimmon output is low, so purchasing is more difficult. Many times, we do not accept orders from customers because we cannot buy persimmons."
