After a day without medals, on September 27, the Vietnamese sports delegation continued to look forward to the performances of the athletes in shooting, taekwondo, chess... and to some extent, wushu with former ASIAD 17 champion Duong Thuy Vi competing in the two events of swordplay and spearmanship. At the age of 30, the "martial arts beauty queen" is still a pillar of the wushu team and one of the biggest hopes of Vietnamese martial arts at this congress.
Seeing her young teammates like Tran Thi Kieu Trang, Nguyen Thi Hien, Do Duc Tai, Nong Van Huu... not competing successfully, Thuy Vi felt her great responsibility. After the morning swordplay competition only won 9,700 points and temporarily ranked 6th on the overall ranking, Thuy Vi made a spectacular breakthrough in the spearplay competition in the afternoon. She scored 9,726 points for a highly difficult performance, ensuring technical elements, beauty and especially the majestic demeanor of the performer. Only the host martial artist Lai Xiao-xiao was given a higher score and this acceleration brought Thuy Vi the 3rd place overall with the combined result of the 2 competitions being 14,926 points.

If Lai Xiao-xiao was truly an unknown quantity at the Games, as the 30-year-old had only won one title in her entire career (a gold medal at the 2015 World Championships) until her victory in Hangzhou, Yang Cuiwei was the surprise of the tournament. She beat former world champion Seo Hee-ju by an incredible 0.03 points to win the bronze medal.
Having won two ASIAD medals nine years apart, with a bronze medal in Indonesia five years ago in between, Thuy Vi still feels the same emotions when she is present in the most prestigious arenas and, importantly, wins, even though this time the medal is still bronze. She is waiting to defend her master's thesis and will also attend the world championship this year before planning for the future.
The achievements of "martial arts beauty queen" Duong Thuy Vi or the bronze medal of 23-year-old female martial artist of Thai ethnic Bac Thi Khiem in taekwondo will certainly encourage all members of the Vietnamese sports delegation to make efforts in the following competition days.
