Samsung will produce sixth-generation AI chips for Tesla under a $16.5 billion deal at a factory under construction in Texas, which is expected to open in 2026 and is not far from Elon Musk's Austin residence.
On the X platform, the Tesla CEO confirmed that he would “personally drive the progress” of the factory, calling it a key point in the collaboration. In addition, Musk said that Samsung had agreed to let Tesla participate fully in the process of optimizing production efficiency. This is seen as a clear sign that the South African billionaire is operating in “founder mode,” an operating model that focuses on every detail.
The term “founder mode” first appeared in Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky’s 2024 speech at Y Combinator. The concept was later expanded upon by Y Combinator co-founder Paul Graham, who described it as an optimal management style where the founder is directly involved in operations rather than managing through intermediaries. Musk is one of the most prominent proponents of this model, along with Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke.
The Tesla CEO is no stranger to running a company at the micro level. He has slept at the factory during Tesla's production crunch and has personally overseen key projects at SpaceX and X. His commitment to oversee the Samsung deal is the latest example of how the "founder" style of management is still in full swing.
Musk is not the only one overseeing tech supply chains on this scale, however. Apple’s Tim Cook has built a reputation for rigorously managing global supply chains, particularly in China. Apple was caught booking 50 business-class tickets a day from San Francisco to Shanghai for employees overseeing iPhone production at its Zhengzhou and Shenzhen factories.
For its part, the Tesla deal is seen as a big win for Samsung’s chip foundry business. By the afternoon of July 29, the Korean manufacturer’s shares had risen 6.8% following the news of the deal.
