On November 18, the European Commission (EC) opened a market investigation into Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, based on the European Union (EU) Digital Markets Act (DMA).
The move is aimed at limiting the power of tech giants and ensuring fair competition for smaller rivals.
The EC is considering whether Amazon and Microsoft should be designated as “gatekeepers” in the cloud services sector.
As defined in the DMA, “gatekeepers” are large core platform services platforms of significant scale and influence, which are mandated by the EU to manage access to the digital market.
These platforms have the potential to have a major impact on the market and need to be regulated to ensure fair competition.
In addition, the EC is also opening a third investigation to assess the effectiveness of the DMA in preventing anti-competitive practices in the cloud computing sector. The EC expects to complete these investigations within 12 months.
In the latest statement, Microsoft said it is ready to cooperate with the investigation agency./.
