On May 5, European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen announced a 500 million euro ($566.6 million) incentive package to boost the European Union's (EU) scientific research capacity and attract leading scientists from around the world.
Speaking at the “Choose Europe for Science” conference held in Paris (France), Ms. von der Leyen emphasized that science is a strategic investment and said that the EU needs to create more favorable conditions to retain and attract international talent.
The EU's goal is to become a "global magnet for researchers," she said, with member states encouraged to increase investment in research and development to at least 3% of GDP by 2030.
The investment, which will be implemented in the 2025-2027 period, is expected to strengthen scientific research capacity in Europe and attract outstanding scientists from around the world, especially those from the US who are worried about the new policies of the Trump administration.
She also affirmed the orientation of placing science, innovation and technology at the heart of the EU's economic development strategy, while building a social foundation where universities play a key role.
She warned that questioning the role of science was “a serious miscalculation,” when it was science that held the key to the bloc's future.
Earlier in April, France launched the “Choose France for Science” platform run by the French National Research Agency (ANR), which allows research institutions, universities and scientific academies to apply for government funding to host foreign scientists.
This initiative is part of the EU's overall efforts to enhance its global competitiveness in research and innovation./.
