Fabregas takes his hat off to Morata

Alvaro Morata is still looking for his first Serie A goal for Como, but for Cesc Fabregas, that doesn't matter.

Morata (left) still plays an important role at Como.

On the contrary, the Spanish coach affirmed that his student is playing a key role in the journey of maturity of the small team in the Lombardy region.

The fourth journey back to Italy

Last summer, Morata left Galatasaray to return to Italy - where he had played for Juventus and AC Milan. At the age of 33, the Spanish striker did not choose an ambitious destination, but instead went to Como, a team that is gradually asserting its position in Serie A under the guidance of coach - former player Cesc Fàbregas.

It's not just a reunion of two old friends, but also a new challenge for both: Fabregas in the role of head coach, and Morata in an effort to prove he's more than just a number.

“We didn’t bring Morata in to score goals,” Cesc said on his debut. “We need his experience, his influence and his ability to work for the team.”

After the first seven rounds, Morata is still “silent”, but his mark is not small. An assist for Nico Paz in the draw with Genoa, along with a strong performance against Juventus, is proof of his increasingly clear role in the way Como operates.

Morata has experience.

In the win over the “Old Lady” last weekend, Morata played the full 92 minutes - without scoring, but involved in almost every important move. He constantly dropped deep, pressed, opened up space and created chances for his teammates. Cesc understood that to have a fit Morata, he needed to give him time to adapt both physically and mentally.

“Alvaro played a perfect game, exactly as I asked him to,” Fabregas said after the match. “It’s a pity that people only judge a striker by his goals. For me, today he showed why he is here. He fought for the team, and that’s what I’m most proud of.”

From “killer” to inspiration

In the Giuseppe Sinigaglia, the crowd felt it too. They stood up and applauded when Morata pressed to exhaustion, when he stretched himself to make way for Nico Paz or curled a tricky shot that forced Di Gregorio to show his talent. There was no goal, but Morata scored in other ways: with his spirit, with his dedication, by making people believe he was fighting for the team.

Fabregas – who once played alongside Morata for Spain – understands better than anyone the value of a player who dares to change. He is helping his former student “transform”, from an instinctive striker to a well-rounded player who connects and supports his teammates.

That's what Cesc Fabregas needs.

Of course, Morata still needs a goal to rekindle his killer instinct. But as Cesc says, “the important thing is to keep your balance.” When that first goal comes, it unlocks everything: the confidence, the feel for the ball, and the relaxed spirit that Morata had during his brilliant years in Turin.

Morata is not the only star at Como. Nico Paz is shining with four goals and four assists. But for Fàbregas, Morata's value lies elsewhere - in his experience, perseverance and ability to lead his players through actions, not just words.

“After the first goal, everything came naturally,” Cesc insisted. “I had enough patience, and Como also had enough faith in Morata.”

In a football world obsessed with numbers, Cesc Fabregas chose a different path - one of faith, of people, and of football based on the collective spirit. At Como, Morata was not yet the top scorer. But he became a symbol of effort, and proof that there are players who are judged not by the number of goals, but by the quiet influence they leave on the pitch.
