On May 15, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued a warning about a large-scale impersonation campaign in which bad actors used text messages and voice messages generated by artificial intelligence (AI) to impersonate high-ranking US officials.
The goal of the campaign was to gain unauthorized access to the personal accounts of federal and state officials.
According to the FBI's public service announcement, gaining access to these accounts was intended to spy on other officials, access networks of associates and contacts, or exploit information, or even commit fraud to appropriate assets.
The FBI said many of the targets were current and retired officials, along with individuals with business connections to them.
Attackers often start by sending messages to establish a relationship, then lure the victim into moving the conversation to another messaging platform.
In some cases, that platform is actually a hacker-controlled website designed to steal login credentials like usernames and passwords.
The FBI has not yet released the number of victims or determined the motives of the cybercrime groups.
Previously, in December 2024, the FBI warned about the trend of criminals using AI to create fake content such as text, images, audio and video , serving fraud, scams and extortion./.
