FIFA demotes Vietnamese football team to 1st division for match-fixing

FIFA's announcement on the evening of May 2 said that two teams were disciplined for their involvement in match-fixing, including Kenya and Vietnam. In Vietnam's case, Phu Tho Club is playing in the 2025 Second Division. They are at the bottom of Group A, having lost all 3 matches and have a goal difference of -10.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee concluded that Phu Tho had fixed the match, thus demoting the team to the third division. FIFA has notified the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and Phu Tho Club. The team has the right to appeal within 10 days.

VFF confirmed yesterday that since the beginning of 2025, it has requested Phu Tho team to provide information related to the above incident to FIFA. Accordingly, FIFA conducts regular negative reviews in parallel with efforts to prevent negative football in member federations.

VFF said it has been and will continue to strictly handle negative behaviors and strengthen inspection and supervision of the entire national tournament system.
