Nearly 600 students are covered for health insurance treatment from 200 million VND

On September 20, Vietnam Social Security (VSS) said that in the 2022-2023 school year, more than 97% of the total number of students nationwide will participate in health insurance, meaning that more than 18.8 million students will be guaranteed and enjoy health insurance benefits.

In case of illness or accident, students will be paid by the Health Insurance Fund with unlimited medical examination and treatment costs within the scope and level of benefits.

In fact, there have been many cases of students suffering from incurable, chronic diseases that require long-term treatment such as dialysis, cancer treatment, cardiovascular surgery, etc. that have been paid from tens of millions to billions of dong by the Health Insurance Fund.

Statistics in 2021 and 2022 show that on average, each year, the whole country has nearly 3 million students using health insurance cards, with about 6.1 million health insurance examinations and treatments, the total cost of health insurance examinations and treatments for the group of students is on average more than 2,500 billion VND/year.

In 2022 alone, the whole country will have about 3.5 million students receiving health insurance treatment with nearly 7.4 million medical examinations and treatments, the amount paid by the health insurance fund is 3,142 billion VND.

In the first 8 months of 2023, the number of students receiving health insurance examination and treatment was about 2.7 million with 5.2 million visits, the amount paid by the health insurance fund was 2,174 billion VND.

From 2022 to present, many cases of students have had their medical expenses covered by the Health Insurance Fund, specifically as follows:

1,435 students were paid from 100 - 200 million VND by the Health Insurance Fund, with a total amount of 194.4 billion VND.

568 students were paid from 200 to 500 million VND, with the total amount paid by the health insurance fund being 165.5 billion VND.

66 students were funded from over 500 million VND with a total amount of 43 billion VND.

Notably, some cases were paid with large amounts of over 1 billion VND. Of which, the patient paid the highest amount by the health insurance fund was 1.07 billion VND (in 2022): card code HS4797937XXXXXX, 17 years old, address in Tan Quy Ward, Tan Phu District (HCMC), the main diagnosis was "disease of the eye socket, acute myocarditis, sequelae of intracranial injury".

The patient with the second highest payment from the health insurance fund is 1.04 billion VND (in 2022): card code HS4828222XXXXXX, 15 years old, in Duong Diem commune, Chau Thanh district ( Tien Giang ); the main diagnosis is "hereditary factor VIII deficiency, severe dengue fever".

Another case, also paid 1.04 billion VND by the Health Insurance Fund (of which 0.66 billion VND was paid in 2022, 0.38 billion VND was paid in 8 months of 2023): card code HS4013520XXXXXX, 9 years old, address Hoang Hoa Tham street, Ba Dinh district ( Hanoi ); main diagnosis is "liver fibrosis, cholangitis, biliary atresia...".
