Nearly 900 artists participate in the National Cheo Festival in 2025

The National Cheo Festival is organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism every three years to summarize and evaluate the quality of creation, staging and performance of Cheo art by art units nationwide. This is also an opportunity to honor collectives and individuals who have made many contributions to the work of preserving and promoting the value of Cheo art - a unique national theatrical form, rich in identity and vitality in the spiritual life of Vietnamese people. The festival is also an opportunity for artists, actors, musicians, directors, painters, choreographers... to show their talents, exchange and share creative experiences, and at the same time contribute to affirming the position of Cheo theater in the general picture of Vietnamese performing arts in the period of integration and development.

The 2025 National Cheo Festival was assigned by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to the Department of Performing Arts to preside over, in coordination with the Vietnam Stage Artists Association, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Bac Ninh province and relevant units from October 20 to November 2 at the Bac Ninh Provincial Culture - Exhibition Center, Bac Ninh province. The 21 plays participating in the festival were elaborately staged, deeply reflecting social life, praising the homeland, country and people of Vietnam, honoring moral and humanistic values and aspirations for goodness, demonstrating the dedication, talent and serious working spirit of art units across the country.

Regarding the regulations of this year's festival, the Department of Performing Arts said that each unit will participate in one play. In case a public art unit has many troupes, the number of plays that can be registered to participate corresponds to the number of troupes. Plays staged by the unit that have won awards in competitions, festivals, and professional Cheo art performances organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Central Association of Specialized Literature and Arts, the Ministry of National Defense, and the Ministry of Public Security are not allowed to participate in the festival.

For public art units, there must be a written consent to participate in the festival from the governing body. For non-public art units, there must be a written approval to perform from the competent authority; must ensure that the performance is in accordance with the approved content and form. For art units under the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Public Security, there must be a decision approving the plan from the governing body.

Each play lasts from 90 to 120 minutes, not including intermission (if any). Artists and actors playing the main and supporting roles must not participate in more than 2 plays at the Festival. The ideological theme and content must be clear, not contrary to the Party's guidelines and policies and the State's laws; must not insult leaders, national heroes, celebrities; must not infringe upon the legitimate rights and interests of organizations and individuals; must not go against the will and aspirations of the people...

The festival awards include: Gold Medals, Silver Medals for plays; Gold Medals, Silver Medals for performing artists. Artists and actors who participate in multiple roles in multiple plays at the festival, if they meet the award criteria, will only receive one highest award. In addition, the Organizing Committee also awards Excellence Awards to each creative element in the plays participating in the festival, including: Scriptwriter; Director; Musician; Artistic Designer; Choreographer.
