In mid-October, at the Vinh airport upgrade project site, trucks carrying construction materials were bustling in and out. Workers operating cranes and excavators were divided into many construction teams.

The aircraft parking area is being renovated and expanded by nearly 30,000 m2 to increase capacity from 6 to 9 parking positions; the runway and taxiway are being completely stripped for new concrete construction. The 45m wide runway is being constructed by a consortium of ACC Aviation Construction Corporation, Truong Son Construction Company, CIENCO 4 Group Joint Stock Company and Vietnam Construction Investment Development Joint Stock Company.

In package No. 11, CIENCO 4 Group undertakes to build 500m of runway and 200m of taxiways W1 and W2.

Talking to us, engineer Nguyen Quang Trung - Deputy Site Commander, CIENCO 4 Group, said: The enterprise undertakes the construction of 2 packages: the apron and the runway. Currently, CIENCO focuses on human resources and equipment to meet the schedule; with 8 construction teams, we have completed 80% of the runway including concrete pouring, water supply and drainage, taxiways W1, W2. The remaining 120m of weak ground has completed the construction of cement pile reinforcement.

Regarding the parking lot location, due to the land issue, the handover has just been completed, so the construction is only 20%. Currently, the mixed mix has been completed, and equipment is being mobilized to prepare for pouring concrete. "According to the design, all 3 parking lots must have weak ground treated by drilling and driving cement piles. Currently, there are 2 cement drilling rigs, we will mobilize 1 more rig, combine overtime, and increase shifts to strive to complete the parking lot site in one month", said engineer Trung.

Engineer Nguyen Minh Viet - project management officer, added: Up to this point, 6 contractors in the project have all achieved the set progress. Of which, the runway has constructed 2km of 2-layer concrete, equivalent to 80%. The remaining short section of weak soil, the units are focusing on reinforcing. For the apron, as soon as the site is handed over, we directed the contractor to prepare drilling lines for making soil cement piles, to catch up with the progress of other items. However, the biggest concern is still the weather.

The workload is high, the time is tight, while the price of construction materials is rising, and the recent storms No. 5 and No. 10 have greatly affected the construction progress. However, to get the project back up and running in time, the remaining stages are still worked day and night, even in the rain.

Improve passenger service capacity
