Coach Shin Tae-yong's position is under serious threat, and the PSSI president is demanding an explanation.

Shin Tae-yong was a huge disappointment.

"If asked, I would affirm that the Indonesian national team, under coach Shin Tae-yong and with the players we have, is capable of beating Myanmar, Laos, and the Philippines. Losing to Vietnam is normal for a team with many young players. If we tried our best to reach the semi-finals and then lost, that's okay, because we did our best. However, the team didn't achieve its goal," said Erick Thohir in a statement published on PSSI on December 22nd.

Mr. Erick Thohir also affirmed that there will be specific assessments of the Indonesian team's performances and coach Shin Tae-yong's decisions following their defeat in the AFF Cup.

"This is certain. The coaches of the Indonesian national team will all have their specific explanations. That's in the contract. I can't talk about every single match, but I have to evaluate. I evaluate everything; I don't want to make mistakes, because success comes from a good plan, a good coach, and good players," the PSSI President emphasized.

According to Erick Thohir: "I said from the beginning that, at the AFF Cup, the goal of the Indonesian national team is to give our best. If we're talking about giving our best, with these coaches and players, we should at least have reached the semi-finals of the AFF Cup. Therefore, with this defeat, the PSSI will naturally conduct an evaluation. This is also normal."

Without their naturalized players, the Indonesian team is weak.

Meanwhile, coach Shin Tae-yong explained: "Failing to advance from the group stage of the AFF Cup is a failure, but it shows that this wasn't Indonesia's best team. If we had fielded our strongest lineup, we would have won. However, with a squad mainly composed of young players, instead of talking about the failure, I believe this is a valuable experience for the players to grow significantly in the future."

Coach Shin Tae-yong also stated: "The Indonesian national team squad for the 2024 AFF Cup will be the same squad that competed in the 2026 U-23 Asian Championship qualifiers and the 2025 SEA Games. Therefore, Indonesian fans shouldn't worry too much; they have gained valuable experience and will mature. This will also be a valuable resource for the national team in the future."

In Group B of the 2024 AFF Cup (ASEAN Championship), the Indonesian team only managed a 1-0 win against Myanmar, a 3-3 draw against Laos, a 0-1 loss against Vietnam, and a 0-1 loss to the Philippines in their final group stage match. The Indonesian team finished third in the group with 4 points, thus being eliminated early. The Philippines and Vietnam secured the two semi-final spots.
