Eel meat prices drop sharply

(HG) - Since the beginning of the year, the price of commercial eel has continuously decreased sharply, leading to the risk of losses for eel farmers in the area. Currently, farmers sell eel meat to traders and purchasing warehouses at 71,000-78,000 VND/kg. The retail price of eel in many markets is currently only 125,000-140,000 VND/kg (eel size about 4-6 eels/kg). This price is down nearly 30,000 VND/kg compared to the last months of 2023.

Currently, traders come to buy eel meat from people at the price of 71,000-78,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Nguyen Anh Kha, who has more than 4 years of experience in raising eels, said: “Currently, the selling price of eels is low, making eel farmers worried. This time, I weighed more than 1,600kg for traders at 78,000 VND/kg of eels. With the current selling price, after deducting investment costs, eel farmers will have no profit or very little profit.”

The reason for the sharp drop in eel prices is that many people say that the supply has increased sharply, many localities have promoted the development of eel farming, especially eel farming using the mud-free model and feeding with industrial feed, the supply is higher than demand leading to a surplus market and falling prices, directly affecting the economic development of farmers. In addition, this year, the export output of eel meat is somewhat slower than previous years, which also contributes to the price decrease.
