According to a report from the International Coffee Organization (ICO), coffee exports from Asia have recorded a significant decline recently. Specifically, total exports from Vietnam, India and Indonesia decreased by about 31.20% compared to the previous year, of which Vietnam recorded a decrease of 39.50% in December. In contrast, Africa made progress with an export increase of 8.00%, mainly thanks to the increase in exports from Ethiopia, reaching an increase of 28%.
The ICO report also showed that exports from Mexico and countries in the traditional wet-processed Arabica bloc of Central America such as Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador increased by 0.90% compared to the same period last year.
The Brazilian Coffee Industry Association predicts that coffee prices will continue to rise in the coming weeks, at least until the harvest in April or May. The main reason for this price increase is adverse weather events that have affected the harvest. Global coffee consumption is also increasing, especially from new consumer markets such as China.
The impact of the price increase is expected to last for another 2 to 3 months. After that, there may be a slowdown and some stabilization, but prices may only decline during next year's harvest.
Coffee prices have been rising steadily since last November, not only in Brazil – the world’s leading coffee exporter with nearly 40% of the market share, but also in Vietnam (17%) and Colombia. Although Brazil’s harvest hit a record in 2020, subsequent years have been difficult due to weather impacts.
In 2021, a frost cut nearly a quarter of the Arabica crop, and there was no recovery in 2022. The association said it typically takes two years for crops to recover from a frost event. In 2023, the crop was further affected by El Niño, with prolonged drought and high temperatures. Finally, last year was affected by prolonged rains.
All of these issues have forced producers to increase their costs. The coffee industry has experienced a cost increase of more than 200%, with only about 38% of that being passed on to consumers. Over the past four years, raw material prices have increased by 224%, while retail coffee prices have increased by 110%. The consumer price volatility for roasted and ground coffee last year was 37.4%.
