The live hog market on April 22 recorded a clear differentiation between regions. While the North and most of the Central region maintained a stable state, the South stood out with a dominant upward price trend.
Pig prices recover, Soc Trang farmers confident in restocking
The high price of live pigs has motivated many households to boldly re-herd and expand production scale, according to Lao Dong newspaper.
Ms. Lam Thi Duoc, a household with 10 years of pig farming experience in Trung Binh commune (Tran De district, Soc Trang province), shared: "Before the Lunar New Year, my family sold 10 pigs for 68,000 VND/kg. After deducting all expenses, each pig made a profit of about 2 million VND. Seeing that the pig price was good, I decided to use all the profit to immediately buy 10 piglets to continue raising."
According to Ms. Duoc, the price of live pigs this year has increased significantly, currently at 73,000 - 74,000 VND/kg (an increase of 14,000 - 24,000 VND/kg compared to the same period), bringing in a profit of 2 - 3.5 million VND for each pig weighing about 100kg.
"This is a great motivation for my family to immediately restore the herd. The herd is now 2 months old and is expected to be sold during the upcoming Doan Ngo Festival. If the pig price remains the same as it is now, I estimate that each pig will make 30% more profit than last year," Ms. Duoc happily calculated.
According to statistics, the total herd of pigs (excluding piglets that have not been weaned) in Soc Trang province is currently nearly 192,000, an increase of nearly 3% over the same period last year. The price of live pigs remains high, along with the well-controlled African swine fever situation, creating more motivation for farmers to boldly restore their herds and expand their production scale.
To sustainably develop pig herds and reduce the risk of disease, the Soc Trang agricultural sector recommends that farmers strictly comply with disease prevention measures: fully vaccinate, apply biosecurity, disinfect barns, control and disinfect vehicles, and disinfect equipment.
