On July 18, the price of live pigs in the Northern region continued to decrease, extending the decline that began at the beginning of the week.
The pig price map shows many localities with green colors and red arrows – reflecting the situation of weak selling prices and increased selling pressure.
Specifically, 9 provinces in the North witnessed a clear price decrease, including some notable points: Dien Bien dropped sharply by 2,000 VND/kg, down to 63,000 VND/kg - the lowest in the region. In Lao Cai, Lai Chau, Son La, Quang Ninh, Bac Ninh, Cao Bang, Hai Phong and Ninh Binh, the decrease ranged from 1,000 - 1,500 VND/kg. Only Hanoi , Hung Yen, Thai Nguyen, Tuyen Quang, Lang Son and Phu Tho remained at 65,000 VND/kg, with no recorded fluctuations.
Currently, the price of live pigs in the North is commonly between 63,000 - 65,000 VND/kg - a sharp decrease compared to the beginning of the month and there are still no clear signs of recovery.
Central Highlands: The whole region decreased, prices hit a new bottom
The market situation in the Central and Central Highlands regions on July 18 became even more gloomy when all provinces recorded price decreases, with no locality maintaining the old price level.
Some provinces have specific adjustments as follows: Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue decreased by 1,000 VND, currently at 62,000 VND/kg. Prices in Quang Ngai, Khanh Hoa and Da Nang also decreased by 1,000 VND, fluctuating around 62,000 - 63,000 VND/kg. Gia Lai alone continues to maintain the bottom at 62,000 VND/kg.
This is currently the region with the lowest price in the country to date. Although supply is not at a surplus level, weak purchasing power has restrained the market's growth. Slow consumption in domestic distribution channels is identified as one of the main reasons why pork prices have not been able to increase.
South: Prices begin to adjust, downward trend spreads
The South – once considered the most stable region – has now also recorded its first decline in recent times.
On July 18, some southern provinces started to slightly decrease by VND1,000/kg, marking the spread of the price decrease nationwide.
Places that have recorded a decrease include: Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Thap, An Giang, Ca Mau: down 1,000 VND/kg, bringing the price to about 65,000 VND/kg. Meanwhile, some localities still maintain a high price: Dong Nai, Tay Ninh, Lam Dong, Can Tho: continue to maintain the price of 66,000 VND/kg - the highest in the country at the present time.
Although the price of live pigs in the South is still higher than in other regions, the market has not maintained the stability as at the beginning of the week.
A correction has emerged and if consumption does not improve in the short term, prices may continue to fall further.
Cao Bang: Disease outbreak, nearly 6,000 pigs destroyed
According to information from VNA, up to now, Cao Bang province has detected 42 outbreaks, causing nearly 6,000 pigs to be destroyed with a total weight of over 261 tons at 1,142 farming households.
The epidemic is still present in 35 communes that have not completed 21 days of quarantine, increasing the risk of widespread spread.
Mr. Dinh Xuan Lap - Deputy Head of the Veterinary Department, Department of Agriculture and Environment of Cao Bang province said: "People's subjectivity in disease prevention since the end of 2024 is one of the main reasons why the disease spread rapidly."
Besides subjective factors from the people, the restructuring of local administrative apparatus also caused the vaccination activities to be interrupted.
Notably, many sows are not vaccinated due to the vaccine regulation only applying to 4-week-old piglets and pigs for meat, increasing the risk of disease outbreaks in the herd.
In fact, in some places, there has been a situation of selling off sick pigs and dumping their carcasses indiscriminately, causing serious environmental pollution.
Specifically, on June 24, authorities discovered 23 seriously ill pigs, weighing more than 1 ton, abandoned in the middle of the forest in Ma Ba commune (before the merger of Ha Quang district), forcing them to be urgently destroyed.
Faced with the above situation, on June 30, the People's Committee of Cao Bang province issued Official Dispatch No. 15, requesting urgent implementation of thorough, effective and synchronous epidemic prevention measures.
The dispatch stated: “The main causes are negligence in direction and supervision, people have not fully implemented veterinary hygiene, vaccination rates are still low and pathogens exist in the old environment.”
The Provincial People's Committee also requested the establishment of an epidemic prevention team in hamlets with an epidemic, on duty 24/7 to control destruction, transportation, general cleaning of barns, disinfection spraying and containment of epidemic areas.
Slaughter activities in epidemic areas must strictly comply with Decision No. 972 of the Prime Minister.
To strengthen epidemic control capacity, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Cao Bang province is closely coordinating with localities in monitoring, warning, zoning and handling outbreaks; at the same time, ensuring adequate supply of vaccines and chemicals, as well as controlling the slaughter, trade and transportation of pigs.
In the context of the complicated epidemic, the government and people expect the management apparatus to stabilize soon to deploy effective control measures and thoroughly handle violations, contributing to protecting the livestock industry and moving towards sustainable agricultural development.
