In recent days, pig prices have decreased slightly, the current price level helps farmers get quite good profits. Meanwhile, due to the great demand for herd restoration and herd expansion, the price of piglets has also increased rapidly.
Farmers are happy because of high profits.
According to many long-time pig farmers in the province, the price of live pigs usually increases before and during the Lunar New Year every year and cools down due to consumer demand after the peak period. However, this year the market recorded an unusual development when at this time, the price of live pigs not only did not decrease but also continuously increased.
Mr. Nguyen Van Binh, a pig farmer in Tan Hoi commune, Tan Chau district, said that his family currently has 3 breeding sows, 12 pigs weighing about 35-40 kg each and a litter of piglets over a month old. About 10 days ago, his family sold 10 pigs weighing an average of 95-105 kg each, selling for 7.5 million VND/quintal. After deducting all farming costs, his family made a profit of about 25 million VND after more than 5 months of raising.
According to Mr. Binh, in previous years, when the price of live pigs fell below the cost of production, his family still tried to maintain the breeding, sometimes only having breeding sows left in the barn. From mid-2024 until now, when the price of live pigs began to increase, he started raising pigs for meat.
“The current pig price is a very encouraging sign for us pig farmers, because pig farming is very difficult now, the cost of raising pigs has increased due to the need to invest in proper barns, and the price of pig feed is one and a half times higher. During the raising process, we also have to vaccinate fully, spray disinfectant weekly, otherwise if we are a little subjective, an epidemic will occur and we will lose everything,” Mr. Binh added.
Farmer Nguyen Thi Rieng, Hoa Hiep commune, Tan Chau district said that before the Lunar New Year 2025, her family sold 9 pigs for 62,000 VND/kg. After paying off all the debt for buying animal feed and deducting veterinary costs, the family made a profit of about 1 million VND for each pig. Currently, her family has 13 pigs ready to be sold. With the current selling price, she is very happy because the family will earn money after more than 4 months of hard work taking care of them.
"I heard some traders say that the price of pork has been going down these past few days. Just yesterday, the traders quoted a price of less than 6.5 million VND/quintal. I will probably ask them to weigh it tomorrow. If it rains, there is a very dangerous risk of disease outbreak," said Ms. Rieng.
According to some traders in Chau Thanh district and Tay Ninh city, the price of live pigs has increased by more than 15,000 VND/kg since after Tet, with the peak selling price of live pigs among people at 75,000-80,000 VND/kg at the end of March. However, in the past week, the price of pigs for slaughter has dropped sharply, currently the purchase price at large farms is about 72,000 VND/kg, while the purchase price of small-scale farmers is only about 68,000 to 70,000 VND/kg, depending on the quality of the pigs.
According to the writer's survey at some markets in Tay Ninh city and Hoa Thanh town, the price of pork is also high. Specifically, lean meat costs over 120,000 VND/kg, pork ribs 150,000 VND/kg, pork belly 130,000 VND/kg, and pork chops 110,000 VND/kg.
The price of piglets is half the price of pork.
The continuous increase in the selling price of live pigs from the second half of 2024 until now has led to the need for herd restoration of many households, creating a price fever for piglets in the province.
If at the same time last year, the selling price of each piglet (weighing 10-15 kg) fluctuated from 900,000 VND to more than 1.3 million VND, now this price has doubled, but farmers still find it difficult to find satisfactory piglets.
Ms. Dang Thi Dung, Phuoc Vinh commune, Chau Thanh district, said that her family used to maintain a herd of 10 to 20 pigs. However, the selling price of pork has continuously dropped, while the price of animal feed has increased since the Covid-19 pandemic. After two years of unprofitable farming, she has temporarily stopped raising pigs since the end of 2023.
Seeing that pig prices have improved again, since after Tet until now, her family has repaired the pig pen, but currently the price of piglets is so high that she does not dare to spend money to buy them for fear of losing money.
Mr. Tuan, a trader specializing in purchasing and supplying piglets in Tan Bien district, said that in the past, there was a long period when pork prices were low and animal feed prices were high, many small-scale pig farms were not profitable, even losing money, so there were many cases of disbanding pig herds. Therefore, the number of breeding sows in the population is still quite small, many families only maintain one or two breeding sows, and each household has at most less than 10 pigs. Meanwhile, large-scale breeding units often raise pigs for businesses, are provided with standard breeding pigs, and very few cases of retail sales outside, and if there are any, the selling price is 1.5 or 2 times higher than the outside market.
According to Mr. Tuan, since the end of February, the demand for piglets to restock the herd has been very high, while the supply is not enough, so the selling price has increased. In many cases, he paid a small deposit and was immediately returned because someone bought at a higher price.
According to a trader in Dong Khoi commune, Chau Thanh district, currently, on the market, the price of small piglets from 8-10 kg is sold at the farm at 2.5 million VND/pig. Large piglets from 14 kg/pig to over 16 kg/pig are almost gone, if any, households need money urgently and have to sell their herds, the price is also nearly 3 million VND/pig.
A farm owner in Bien Gioi commune, Chau Thanh district expressed his opinion that currently, if any family has a source of piglets at home to raise, it is still feasible, but if they buy piglets at a high price at this time, they will face a very high risk of loss, because the capital required is too large, plus the cost of animal feed, veterinary medicine, labor, electricity and water, etc., leading to high production costs when selling. In addition, the risk of disease in the pig herd, especially African swine fever, still exists. Meanwhile, with the situation of herd restoration and massive herd increase, when it is time to sell, the price of live pigs may decrease sharply again.
According to the report of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, the total herd of pigs in the province is estimated at 422,900, equal to 142.1% over the same period, of which there are 123 concentrated farms with a total herd of 394,109, accounting for 93.2%. The selling price of live pigs in March reached 79,900 VND/kg at one point (an increase of about 10,000 VND/kg over the same period).
In addition, the African swine fever situation in the provinces in Region VI is complicated and unpredictable; in which, Dong Nai and Long An have outbreaks that have not passed 21 days. The risk of an epidemic in the coming time is very high, while the vaccination against African swine fever has not received a strong response from farmers, most of whom still practice biosafety farming.
