The main reason that tech giant Apple will likely cite to explain the price increase is the significant changes in product design and notable new features of the next-generation iPhone line.
Among the rumored new features of the iPhone 17 series are an improved camera system with 8K video recording, an upgraded telephoto lens with higher resolution, and an improved front camera. Additionally, some models have increased RAM capacity, more durable and scratch-resistant screens.
It's also possible that Apple will extend ProMotion display technology with a high 120Hz refresh rate to the entire iPhone 17 lineup.
Apple will avoid citing tariffs as a reason for the iPhone price hike, according to a person familiar with the matter , but the US-China trade tensions and tariffs on goods made in China — where most of Apple’s products are assembled — are certainly putting pressure on the company’s manufacturing costs.
The fact that Apple seems intent on justifying the iPhone 17 price increase with the addition of new features and designs suggests a carefully calculated strategy, with Apple prioritizing the innovation and added value of the next-generation iPhone to minimize negative consumer reactions to tariffs or other trade policy issues.

According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, the tariff policy could increase Apple's costs by about $900 million this quarter, and even higher in the next period.
As a result, Apple has been building up inventory since March 2025, before the US government announced its new tax policy. At the same time, it has shifted production to serve the US market to India. Earlier this month, Mr. Tim Cook announced that most of the iPhones imported to the US in the second quarter of 2025 will be assembled in India.
However, for high-end iPhone models like the Pro and Pro Max, Chinese factories still handle the majority of production because India's infrastructure and technical capabilities are not yet ready for large-scale production.
Apple typically introduces new iPhones in September. If nothing changes, this year's iPhone lineup will be called the iPhone 17. However, The Wall Street Journal did not provide details on how much the iPhone's price could increase.
Currently, the iPhone 16 starts at $799, the iPhone 16 Pro costs $1,000, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max costs $1,200.
The iPhone 17 is expected to have an additional ultra-thin version, tentatively called the iPhone 17 Air, to replace the iPhone 16 Plus (currently selling for $899 in the US).
