(Dong Nai) - During the 2023 summer-autumn harvest, rice prices reached record highs and continue to rise. Specifically, the current price of regular rice ranges from 6,800-7,100 VND/kg; the price of sticky, fragrant rice ranges from 7,800-8,000 VND/kg, an increase of 400-700 VND/kg compared to the previous month and an increase of 400-1,600 VND/kg compared to the same period last year.

In about two weeks, the rice-growing area in Thanh Son commune, Dinh Quan district, will begin harvesting the 2023 summer-autumn rice crop.

In the export market, following the announcement of rice export bans by India, Russia, and the UAE, world rice prices have been continuously rising. Currently, many markets such as China, the Philippines, and Indonesia are competing to buy Vietnamese rice, contributing to the increase in export rice prices.

In Dong Nai province alone, farmers will begin harvesting the 2023 summer-autumn rice crop in about 2-4 weeks. In some localities such as Tan Phu and Dinh Quan districts, farmers have already harvested their rice early to avoid flooding. This year, Dong Nai planted over 19,000 hectares of rice during the summer-autumn season. According to rice farmers in the province, this year's harvest has seen a significant decrease in yield compared to previous years due to adverse weather conditions, especially the recent flooding. Many rice-growing areas in Tan Phu and Dinh Quan districts suffered heavy losses, with hundreds of hectares of rice fields submerged by heavy rain.

Forecasts indicate that rice prices may continue to rise in the near future. Accordingly, on August 3rd, the Ministry of Industry and Trade issued a document to localities regarding stabilizing the rice market; requiring rice export businesses to have plans for sourcing goods and maintain stable rice reserves to be ready to supply when needed. In case of supply shortages, measures will be taken to control rice exports. This also aims to ensure the supply of rice to the market from now until the end of 2023 and the Lunar New Year of the Dragon 2024 at stable prices.
