Fertilizer prices rise

Compared to more than a month ago, the current prices of some fertilizers such as Urea, DAP, NPK... have increased by at least 10,000-30,000 VND/bag (50kg) and are at a very high level. Compared to the beginning of the year and the same period in 2024, the prices of many types of Urea and NPK fertilizers have increased by a total of 50,000-220,000 VND/bag, while many types of DAP have increased by 300,000-450,000 VND/bag, of which the strongest increase is the Chinese DAP Hong Ha green grain.

On August 15, 2025, the retail price of Phu My Fertilizer, Ca Mau Fertilizer and many types of Urea imported from China at agricultural supply stores in Can Tho City and many provinces in the Mekong Delta was from 690,000-750,000 VND/bag. This is a record high in many years. Meanwhile, Chinese DAP with Hong Ha green grain, DAP with Tuong Phong green grain and Korean DAP were at 1,300,000-1,400,000 VND/bag. The price of NPK 20-20-15 Binh Dien, NPK 20-20-15 Co Bay was 1,050,000-1,100,000 VND/bag; NPK 20-20-15 Ca Mau was 950,000-1,000,000 VND/bag; NPK 16-16-8 13S Viet Nhat costs from 780,000-820,000 VND/bag. Potassium fertilizers (such as Ca Mau Potassium, Israel and Canada Potassium...) are commonly priced from 650,000-680,000 VND/bag. Lan Long Thanh is at 340,000-380,000 VND/bag...

Fertilizer prices increased due to the impact of rising global fertilizer prices, as well as the increase in raw material prices and input costs for domestic fertilizer production and trading. The imposition of VAT on fertilizers also affected the retail price of fertilizers.

Recently, the import of some types of fertilizers such as Hong Ha green grain DAP has encountered difficulties due to reduced supply and increased transportation costs. However, the supply of fertilizers on the market is still abundant, ensuring good response to consumer demand, especially recently when the purchasing power of most fertilizers has been quite weak. Ms. Huynh Thi Be Sau, owner of Nguyen Lieu Agricultural Supplies Store in Thoi Long Ward, Can Tho City, said: "Hopefully, the price of fertilizers will soon decrease again and purchasing power will improve for favorable business. Because the rainy season has entered, farmers in many places have limited fertilization for orchards; the 2025 autumn-winter rice crop in many places is about to be harvested, so farmers have reduced fertilizer purchases. Many fertilizer retailers tend to import goods in moderate quantities, limiting short sales to preserve capital and reduce risks. However, the supply of fertilizers is abundant, ensuring to meet consumer demand...".

According to Ms. Ly To Binh, sales manager at Huyen Tho Agricultural Supplies Store in Co Do Commune, Can Tho City, the store has not been taking in a lot of goods recently, but has chosen the solution of "buying as much as you need, selling as much as you need", to limit risks in the context of high prices of many types of fertilizers. Currently, the purchasing power of many types of fertilizers has also decreased sharply compared to previous months because farmers have applied the second and third doses of fertilizer for the 2025 autumn-winter rice crop and no longer need to buy more fertilizer. In addition, many farmers have also reduced their demand for fertilizer to reinvest, care for, and fertilize crops, especially crops with low output prices.

Farmers hope fertilizer prices will soon decrease again

Because fertilizer investment costs account for a large proportion of the production costs of many crops, farmers hope that fertilizer prices will soon be reduced again, helping farmers to maintain crop production. In addition, farmers also hope that the output prices of agricultural products will be improved to improve production efficiency, increase income, and ensure their livelihoods.

Mr. Nguyen Van Mung, a farmer in Thoi Huu hamlet, Dong Hiep commune, Can Tho city, said: “Recently, the selling prices of many agricultural products such as rice, corn, lotus mirrors... have decreased significantly compared to previous months and compared to the same period in 2024, but fertilizers have increased sharply. Many types of nitrogen fertilizer and DAP have increased by several hundred thousand VND per bag, while these types of fertilizers are in high demand. Farmers really hope that the authorities will soon have a solution to reduce fertilizer prices. At the same time, help people sell rice and other agricultural products at better prices...”.

Mr. Nguyen Hoai Thanh in Dong Thanh Hamlet, Dong Thuan Commune, Can Tho City, said: “My family has 7 hectares of rice, so the demand for fertilizer is quite high. Recently, the price of many types of rice is only at 5,500-6,000 VND/kg, while the price of many types of fertilizer has increased to a very high level, so farmers are at a disadvantage, it will be very difficult to make a profit if this situation continues...”.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Sy in Thoi Long Ward, Can Tho City, his family has 11 hectares of land growing durian and plum. Recently, when the prices of many types of fertilizers have increased and his garden has not yet reached the stage of fruit processing, and because it is the peak of the rainy season, he has limited fertilizing the garden to save costs. However, when it comes to fruit production, he will definitely have to increase the amount of fertilizer for the trees, so he hopes that the price of fertilizer will soon decrease again and the price of agricultural products will be better.

Currently, many types of fertilizers often go through many intermediaries when they reach consumers, leading to high prices. Farmers hope that the authorities will have solutions to reduce intermediaries, support the connection between supply and demand, and create conditions for farmers to buy quality fertilizers at reasonable prices. On the other hand, it is necessary to strengthen market inspection and management, prevent fake and poor quality fertilizers from circulating and being traded in the market to avoid losses for farmers.
