According to data from the General Statistics Office (GSO), in 2022, Vietnam recorded a total of 101 million tourist arrivals, including 3.7 million international arrivals, an increase of more than 2% year-on-year.
Hanoi alone had about 18.7 million visitors last year, far exceeding the city's target of 10 million visitors. Of which, domestic visitors reached about 17.2 million, up 330% year-on-year, and international visitors reached 1.5 million, up 650% year-on-year.

Thanks to the opening of tourism, Hanoi's hotel service industry has initially recorded growth. Specifically, according to a report by Savills, in the fourth quarter of 2022, hotel occupancy reached 49%, up 22% compared to last year.
For the 5-star hotel segment alone, occupancy has reached 60%. Room rates during the period also averaged VND2.5 million/night, up 41% over the same period last year.
Savills' report also said that, considering the whole year of 2022, hotel room occupancy rate reached 39%, average rental price reached 2.2 million VND/night, an increase of 23% compared to last year.
Meanwhile, the latest report of GSO shows that in February 2023, international visitors to Vietnam reached 933,000, 31.6 times higher than the same period last year because Vietnam has opened tourism and international flights have been restored.
In the first two months of 2023, the number of international visitors to our country reached 1.8 million, 36.6 times higher than the same period last year but still less than 60% compared to the same period in 2019, the year before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Savills believes that in 2023, the return of Chinese tourists through the resumption of regular flights between Vietnam and China will be a growth driver for the tourism industry.
Currently, the airlines are delaying the resumption of flights until late April or May 2023, pending further decisions from China on allowing tourists to travel to Vietnam. The hotel industry is expected to benefit from the return of tourists from this key market.
Ms. Do Thu Hang, Senior Director of Research and Consulting, Savills Hanoi, said: At this time, hotel owners are proactively preparing to welcome the increased number of guests during the peak tourist season, gradually launching more options for accommodation.
However, the tourism demand of domestic and foreign visitors is still not enough to increase capacity to 100% at hotels right now.
“The coastal markets of Da Nang have only reached about 50% of their capacity in 2019. Therefore, developing a reasonable operating strategy to gradually increase capacity and build and renovate projects in stages is one of the typical strategies that investors should apply to effectively take advantage of this opportunity,” said Ms. Hang.
