Latest durian price news
In the context of the strong increase in durian exports, with impressive revenue reaching over 3.2 billion USD in 2024, this fruit has been called the “king of fruits”. However, at the workshop, many experts pointed out that this rapid growth is revealing many weaknesses that need to be overcome to ensure sustainable development in the future. These warnings are not new problems but have existed for a long time.
The quality of products in the durian industry actually reflects a weak supply chain, from raw material supply, production to inspection and traceability. This is also a lesson that many other agricultural industries such as passion fruit, banana, and dragon fruit have encountered when exporting too quickly without an effective control system, leading to the risk of losing the market when an incident occurs.
One of the serious problems is the increasing pressure from major import markets such as China and many other countries, which are tightening quality regulations and placing higher requirements on agricultural products exported from Vietnam.
In fact, the discovery of toxic residues such as cadmium and industrial dyes in exported durian has become a major challenge for the entire industry. The main cause is believed to be the accumulation of cadmium in the soil from the long-term abuse of phosphorus-containing fertilizers such as DAP, combined with soil conditions. At the same time, industrial dyes are still used to improve color and ripen fruit after harvest. The Vietnam SPS Office has also recorded cadmium residues in many other agricultural products, while the EU market has warned about pesticide residues in durian.
In addition, there are many other problems such as production chasing quantity without quality control, input materials are not closely monitored, and the use of poor quality fertilizers and pesticides or those containing banned substances is still common in many areas.
