From "fruit king" to cheap goods in the domestic market

Difficulties in exporting durian to the Chinese market have caused the price of this fruit in the domestic market to drop sharply. Since the beginning of 2025, the amount of durian pouring into domestic markets has been at the lowest price in the past three years.

During the period 2022 - 2024, durian prices skyrocketed due to high import demand from China. At times, the retail price of whole durian reached VND270,000/kg, while Ri6 and Monthong durian pulp cost nearly VND850,000/kg, but the domestic market was still in short supply. Many consumers could only look at it because the price was too high, making this fruit an option reserved for high-income customers.

However, since the beginning of 2025, the market situation has changed significantly. When exports to China slowed down, large quantities of durian in stock were brought back for domestic consumption, causing prices to drop sharply. Some stores in Hanoi are selling grade 1 Ri6 durian for only about 55,000 VND/kg, while the price of Ri6 durian pulp ranges from 150,000 to 200,000 VND/kg depending on the type.

According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , this year's durian output is about 1.5 million tons, mainly harvested from April to September. However, the Chinese market, which is the main export market, is sharply reducing imports. In the first 4 months of 2025, Vietnam's durian export value only reached about 130 million USD, a sharp decrease compared to the 500 million USD in the same period last year.

Pressure on supply amid export difficulties has caused durian to flood the domestic market. Many traders predict that durian prices may continue to fall, especially when the harvest season in the Central Highlands enters its peak period in the coming time.
