The domestic durian market on July 26 continued to move sideways, with no significant changes compared to yesterday. The purchase price in the regions remained the same, but the difference between the bucket type and the beautiful type was quite high, up to more than 20,000 VND/kg.
RI6 durian in bulk is being purchased by traders at 20,000 - 26,000 VND/kg, the lowest price currently.
The price of a good quality RI6 ranges from 40,000 - 46,000 VND/kg depending on the region, about 20,000 VND/kg higher than the bucket type.
The best quality Thai durian (Monthong) has the highest price, reaching 76,000 - 80,000 VND/kg, while the bulk type only reaches 38,000 - 45,000 VND/kg.
Business people assess that durian prices are still lower than expected, especially for the RI6 variety, because quality is affected by heavy rain, forcing gardeners to harvest early, making it difficult for the fruit to stay on the tree for long.
While Vietnam and Thailand are dominating durian exports, China – the world’s largest consumer market – has officially entered the harvest phase of domestically grown durian, opening up a new competitive landscape.
China imported about 1.56 million tons of durian in 2024, a five-fold increase compared to 2015. This explains why many Southeast Asian countries consider this a "gold mine" market to export this specialty fruit.
However, with Hainan starting to grow durian, and output expected to increase rapidly in the coming years, many experts believe that China may partially reduce durian imports in the near future, especially for the mid-range segment.
However, competition in quality and supply chain stability is still an advantage for Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia in the short term. Durian brands such as Musang King, Monthong or kampung durian are still positioned as high-end in the Chinese market.
