Pressure from Chinese market: Vietnam durian exports decline

According to information from the General Administration of Customs of China, in the first five months of 2025, the import value of fresh durian decreased by 32.5%, reaching 1.93 billion USD; the import volume also decreased by 32.9%, to only 390,900 tons.

Vietnam was the country most affected, with the value and volume of durian exports to China falling by nearly 62% to $254 million. Meanwhile, Thailand also faced difficulties but still maintained its leading position in supplying durian to the Chinese market.

The main reason for this decline is that China tightened quality control, especially on the compound yellow O, which is suspected of causing cancer. Many shipments were returned, forcing businesses to sell off domestic goods, causing prices to plummet.

From 2023 peak to bleak reality

In 2023, Vietnam's durian exports reached a record high of $3.3 billion, accounting for nearly half of the fruit and vegetable industry's export value. However, by 2025, the situation had changed significantly.

In the first two months of the year, durian exports fell 69% to just $52.7 million; of which, exports to China fell 83% to $27 million. Durian fell from the number one position to third, behind dragon fruit and bananas.

This shows that over-reliance on the Chinese market and lack of contingency planning for a second market is putting the durian industry in a difficult situation.

Although the market is currently sluggish, many experts believe that if there are policies to encourage domestic consumption, increase deep processing (such as freeze-dried durian products, durian ice cream mixed with cashew nuts, etc.) and expand the market to ASEAN and the EU, there is still the possibility of maintaining growth for this industry.

The Dak Lak Durian Association has launched the campaign "Say no to banned substances" and promoted transparency in the traceability process, aiming to expand the growing areas granted official export codes.
