Latest durian price news
In the context of the domestic durian market maintaining stability, durian export activities in the Asian region are taking place vigorously with many new developments.
According to Philstar, the Philippines has been officially licensed to import fresh durian into the Egyptian market after nearly two years of negotiations. This information was announced by the Philippine Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) on May 18, marking an important step in expanding the agricultural export market.
BPI said Egypt’s approval of Philippine durians was the result of strict adherence to phytosanitary and phytosanitary standards. Philippine exporters will need to work closely with their Egyptian counterparts to secure import permits through the Egyptian Agricultural Quarantine Authority’s electronic system, which will streamline the shipping process.
Negotiations began in June 2023, when the Philippines expressed its intention to enter the Egyptian market with fresh durian. Since then, the two sides have been actively cooperating, meeting strict quarantine and pest prevention requirements to reach this agreement.
According to BPI, Egypt is not only a potential consumer market but also serves as a strategic bridge for the Philippines to access the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, where demand for tropical fruits is growing strongly.
According to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), agricultural exports to Egypt last year reached $2.88 million, nearly double the previous year’s $1.46 million, mainly driven by coconut products such as desiccated coconut. The addition of durian to the export portfolio promises to add diversity and value to the Philippine agricultural sector.
Ensuring safe production processes and clear traceability are key to the sustainable development of durian, especially when this product is under strict supervision from international markets. In this context, China – the main export market of Vietnamese durian – has recently granted 829 additional growing area codes and 131 packing facilities, while continuing to allow the import of frozen durian and maintaining the validity of the Phytosanitary Protocol without renegotiation.
However, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam (MARD) has also warned of the risk of cadmium contamination in some durian growing areas. Therefore, the Ministry is implementing measures to control the quality of soil, water, fertilizers, pesticides and cultivation processes to minimize risks related to heavy metal residues.
In particular, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is conducting a comprehensive review of fertilizer import activities, including legal regulations, quality standards and monitoring mechanisms, after receiving feedback on the risk of cadmium in some types of DAP fertilizer imported from Korea. These measures aim to ensure the quality of agricultural products and maintain reputation in the international market.
