Monthong durian grade A is purchased by warehouses in Tien Giang at 200,000 VND per kilogram, an increase of nearly 20% compared to the end of last year.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tuan - a durian trader in Cai Be district (Tien Giang) - said he started buying durian again from February 15. However, in the past two days, the amount of Monthong type A collected has not been enough to pay for orders to export agents, so the purchase price has increased continuously.
"Each kilogram is now 200,000 VND. This price is the same as the old peak a year ago. Off-season Monthong durian is in short supply so we can only buy 1-2 tons per day," said Mr. Tuan.
Ms. Hanh, a trader in Cai Lay (Tien Giang) also went to collect durian from February 13 (the third day of Tet), said she was willing to pay a high price but had no goods. "Some gardens are far away and only have about half a ton, I still come to buy," she said.

VnEpress 's records at durian warehouses of businesses show that Monthong type A (2.7 boxes of 2-5 kg) costs 190,000-202,000 VND per kg, type B (2.5 boxes) 175,000 VND.
In contrast to Monthong durian, Ri 6 has continuously dropped in price from VND148,000 per kilogram to VND120,000-126,000 for grade A, down 14% compared to the end of last year. Grade B durian costs VND100,000, and grade C costs VND75,000.
Explaining the reason why the price of Monthong durian has increased while Ri 6 has decreased , Mr. Dang Manh Khuong - a durian buyer in the West - said that the off-season Monthong durian has come to an end, so there is not much left. Some gardeners in Tien Giang, Can Tho, and Ben Tre are mainly nurturing the trees for the favorable season. As for Ri 6, the price fluctuates because the supply of this type is greater than Monthong.
Sharing the same view, a representative of Van Hoa Durian Company said that Ri 6 has decreased compared to before Tet but is still at a high level. It is expected that from January 10 onwards, the price of this durian will increase again when demand from the export market is large and trading activities are more bustling.
Since July 2022, when Vietnamese durian was officially exported to China, it has always had a high selling price, from 70,000-200,000 VND per kilogram. Thanks to that, in 2023, durian trees brought an average profit of over 1.5 billion VND per hectare, 526 million VND per hectare higher than in 2022.
According to a report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , Vietnam has over 131,000 hectares of durian grown in the Central Highlands, the Southeast and the West. The Central Highlands is the largest capital of durian acreage, of which Monthong is the dominant variety.
In Vietnam, off-season durian is grown in many provinces in the West, of which Tien Giang has the largest area. To date, Tien Giang has 21,790 hectares of durian, an increase of more than 23% and an estimated output of more than 386,000 tons (accounting for nearly 22% of total fruit tree output), an increase of more than 33% over the same period in 2023.
