World steel prices
At the end of the trading session on June 9, the price of June rebar futures on the Shanghai Futures Exchange decreased by 0.38% (11 yuan) to 2,913 yuan/ton. On the Dalian Exchange, the price of June iron ore futures on the Dalian Exchange was flat at 754.5 yuan/ton. Meanwhile, the price of June iron ore futures on the Singapore Exchange decreased by 0.7 USD to 95.56 USD/ton.
China's rebar futures remained below 3,000 yuan/t in early June, hovering near their lowest since September 2024, as dismal economic data from the world's top consumer continued to weigh on the demand outlook.
China's export growth in May fell short of expectations, largely due to a sharp decline in shipments to the United States amid lingering trade tensions.
Imports also fell more than expected, reflecting persistently weak domestic demand.
In addition, consumer prices continued to fall for the fourth consecutive month, while producer price deflation fell to a near two-year low, indicating that the economic recovery remains weak.
Although US and Chinese officials resumed trade talks in London yesterday, market sentiment remained cautious.
Last week, the global steel market also came under pressure when President Donald Trump signed an executive order doubling tariffs on imported US steel to 50%.
The move pushed up domestic US steel prices, but put downward pressure on international steel prices, especially in China.
Chinese steelmakers exported 10.58 million tonnes of finished steel products in May 2025, up 9.9% from a year earlier, and up 1.1% from the previous month, according to data from the General Administration of Customs of China, Reuters reported.
May exports were the highest in seven months, and the third consecutive month that volumes exceeded 10 million tonnes. Analysts said steady supplies pushed up earlier than expected amid concerns that higher tariffs could dampen demand, boosting exports.
Meanwhile, steel imports into China last month fell 24.5% year-on-year to 481,000 tonnes. In the first five months of the year, Chinese producers exported 48.47 million tonnes of steel (+8.9% year-on-year), while imports reached 2.55 million tonnes (-16.1% year-on-year).
