Raising and processing Dong Tao chicken is recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage.

The Hung Yen Provincial Relic Management Board said that Dong Tao chickens have a long history in Dong Tao commune. This is a rare breed of chicken, which is said to have been used as an offering to the king.

The outstanding feature of Dong Tao chicken is its large, rough legs and large weight. Dong Tao chicken is not only an agricultural product but also carries the culture and customs of the Vietnamese people.


This breed of chicken is closely associated with cultural rituals, from raising, processing to worshiping, reflecting sustainable agriculture and preserving national identity.

Dong Tao chicken, also known as Dong Cao chicken, has a long history in Dong Tao commune, Khoai Chau district (Hung Yen). This is a rare breed of chicken, which is said to have been used as a royal offering, and as an offering during ceremonies and festivals.

Over many generations, the people of Dong Tao commune have accumulated experience and formed a system of knowledge and techniques on the biological characteristics of this chicken breed, from the stage of selecting breeds (prioritizing chickens with big legs, red skin, double combs) to raising methods suitable for climate and soil conditions.

This knowledge is passed down by word of mouth and practiced in every family, becoming the secret of the livestock breeders in Dong Tao commune.

In processing Dong Tao chicken, people have passed down many experiences and folk knowledge through generations to be able to process chicken optimally, preserving its flavor and nutritional value.
