The opening ceremony of the 4-day festival, from June 10 to 13 (May 15 to 18 of the lunar calendar), is the Nam Hai Whale welcoming ceremony - welcoming the Whale from the sea to the temple. This is a sacred ritual of the Whale worshiping belief in the Central region. From 5 a.m., a fleet of 20 boats set sail to welcome the Whale. The ritual of entering the temple and singing Ba Trao depicts the daily activities and work of fishermen and the life of the fishing village such as rowing boats, pulling nets, etc., making the festival atmosphere even more jubilant.
The fishing festival is a spiritual cultural ritual of coastal communities, to show gratitude to the sea for providing a source of life for fishing villages; and to pray for favorable weather, safe fishing trips for fishermen, and full holds of fish and shrimp.
After the Whale welcoming ceremony, tomorrow (June 11) will be the Ghost welcoming ceremony, showing respect for the deceased and praying for peace for the whole community.

Mr. Tran Thanh Sy, head of Lo Dieu village, said: "The fishing festival is not only an occasion for us to thank the sea for giving us abundant resources, but also an opportunity to unite the community and educate our children about the village's history and our ancestors' traditions."
