Every year Vietnam has about 140,000 jobs related to renewable energy.

The demand for jobs related to renewable energy is growing rapidly, opening up huge career opportunities for engineering students in the coming decade.

Recently, Thuyloi University organized the 2025 Student Scientific Research Forum (SF25). In addition to the students' academic reports, the employment issue for engineering students was emphasized in the speeches of experts and business representatives.

SF25 is an annual activity of 6 leading technical universities in the field of energy, electricity - electronics and automation, starting from 2020, including: Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Hanoi University of Industry, University of Electric Power, University of Science and Technology - University of Danang, Hanoi University of Science and Technology , University of Water Resources.

In addition to academic activities, SF25 attracts the participation of nearly 20 enterprises in the fields of energy, electricity - electronics, control and automation. This makes SF25 create a strong bridge between scientific research, training and human resource needs of enterprises.

According to Associate Professor Nguyen Canh Thai, Vice Principal of the University of Water Resources, the scale of direct recruitment at SF25 was unprecedented for a scientific forum for engineering students. Enterprises provided figures showing positive changes in the engineering labor market: 100 solar power construction engineers, 100 engineers in the field of production - operation - electrical engineering - automation, 25 testing engineers and 10 project construction engineers, 50 - 100 mechanical engineers.

In addition, many businesses also recruit electromechanical engineers, occupational safety technicians, power plant operations and maintenance technicians, and accept technical interns.

"The emergence of large enterprises with clear human resource needs reflects the trend of the energy industry: shifting to renewable energy, increasing digitalization of power system operations and expanding automation in industry," said Associate Professor Nguyen Canh Thai.

Opening up great opportunities for engineering students

Regarding job prospects, the report of Ms. Nghiem Thi Ngoan, Energy Advisor of the GIZ ESP project (a project of the German International Cooperation Organization) also attracted the attention of many students. According to Ms. Ngoan, Vietnam currently has about 140,000 jobs related to renewable energy. This number could increase to 280,000 by 2030 and 400,000 by 2045, as coal and gas power plants continue to shrink.

The greatest demand for human resources comes from two technology groups: wind power and solar power, each field requires a different labor structure according to each development stage. In the project development and construction stage, wind power requires a large number of concrete workers and operators, while solar power prioritizes manual labor and pile driving teams.

When entering operation and maintenance, wind energy needs up to 50% of the specialized technical workforce, while in the project development phase, the technical staff group accounts for about 26%.

According to Ms. Ngoan, a survey of about 50 businesses in the industry shows that there is currently a shortage of human resources in positions with high intellectual content such as system design, legal advice, and factory operation management. These are all positions that require university or postgraduate degrees and the ability to solve complex problems. Many positions in the labor market do not currently exist, so businesses are forced to train from a traditional energy background.

Mr. Tran Anh Thai, Deputy General Director of Technology at ATS Company, also said that Vietnam's power system will have to expand 2-3 times by 2035. The rapid increase in renewable energy creates major challenges in system balance and operational security. Therefore, real-time monitoring, system modeling and analysis will become core technologies. "The energy industry creates huge career opportunities for engineering students in the next decade," Mr. Thai said.
