Asian steel and iron ore prices rose on expectations of manufacturing reforms and economic stimulus from China. Domestically, construction steel prices at businesses remained stable.
On the Shanghai Stock Exchange
At the end of this morning's trading session, the price of July rebar futures on the Shanghai Stock Exchange increased by 1.18% (36 yuan) to 3,091 yuan/ton.
On the Dalian Exchange, the price of iron ore for July delivery was flat at 748 yuan/ton. Meanwhile, the price of iron ore for July delivery on the Singapore Exchange - SGX increased by 2.02 USD to 97.6 USD/ton.
Iron ore futures on the Singapore Exchange rose for a third straight session, hitting a three-week high on expectations of reforms to control steel output and new economic stimulus packages from China - the world's top consumer, according to Reuters.
Iron ore futures on the Singapore Exchange rose for a third straight session, hitting a three-week high on expectations of reforms to control steel output and new economic stimulus packages from China, the world's top consumer, according to Reuters.
The head of China's National Development and Reform Commission said on July 9 that the size of the country's economy will exceed 140 trillion yuan this year. This comes as China continues to face prolonged trade tensions and deflationary pressures.
“That has somewhat reinforced hopes that more stimulus will be announced at the summit later this month,” said analysts at brokerage Yongan Futures.
In addition, according to analyst Pei Hao from international brokerage Freight Investor Services, “iron ore prices are also supported by the rapid rise in the coal market, which is also affected by expectations of supply-side reform.”
However, expert Pei believes that there has been no fundamental change in the iron ore supply-demand balance: “The volume of cargo transported has decreased, but the actual reduction in supply may only be clearly shown at the end of July.”
Meanwhile, the global rebar market in early July is experiencing mixed fluctuations between regions.
In Türkiye, the price of rebar offered on July 4, 2025 was at USD 536.8/ton FOB, down 0.5% from the previous week and 1.5% from early June. This is the lowest level since the beginning of the year, reflecting weak demand and difficulties in exporting. Prices are expected to continue to decrease this week.
In Europe, the market is in a seasonal lull. Rebar prices held steady at the start of the month, reaching €632.50/t ex-works in Northern Europe and €500/t in Italy. However, compared to the start of June, prices were down 2.7% and 3.8% respectively, with the Italian price at its lowest level since the start of the year.
In contrast, in the US, rebar prices rose sharply by 8.5% compared to June, to $914.90/ton ex-works, and remained stable compared to the previous week. This price increase was due to major producers such as Nucor, Steel Dynamics, Gerdau and CMC simultaneously raising their base prices by $60/ton plus surcharges.
The main driver behind the price increase was the Trump administration's decision to double steel import tariffs to 50%, making foreign supplies difficult.
In China, rebar prices in early July rose 2.1% week-on-week to $424.5/mt FOT and 2.3% from early June. The increase was supported by expectations of new production controls and policies following the Politburo meeting. However, the market remained volatile due to weak demand during the low season, heavy rains in the south and hot weather in the north.
Some mills have stopped producing rebar to switch to higher-margin products such as billets and specialty steel. The export market has also been sluggish, with few new orders and downward price pressure from international competition, squeezing profits.
