On June 6 (US time), in an interview with Hollywood Reporter magazine, four-time Emmy-winning stunt coordinator Rowley Irlam revealed one of the key plot details in season 2 of the Dragon Family series, according to Collider .
Queen Rhaenyra in the final episode of season 1
Season 2 will depict the confrontation between Queen Rhaenyra (played by Emma D'Arcy) and Queen Alicent (Olivia Cooke), when throughout season 1, these two characters were at odds with each other and all conflicts came to a climax when Rhaenyra's son, Lucerys, was "devoured" in the sky by Alicent's son, Aemond, riding the largest dragon, Vhagar.
Hearing that her son was dead and no body was found, Rhaenyra, who had been recruiting soldiers after her father's death, and had previously lost a child due to premature birth, was furious. In the final episode of season 1, when Rhaenyra was discussing with her generals, she heard the terrible news and cried silently and showed her anger. The showrunners ended season 1 right there, signaling the drama that would explode in season 2.
And it is from this conflict between the two families that, according to Rowley Irlam, the upcoming episodes will recreate one of the most costly battles on the small screen - The Battle of Gullet. In George RR Martin's original Fire & Blood (the Dragon Family series is based on this book), this is one of the largest and most violent battles. In the original story, this battle took place at sea.
The conflict within the Targaryen family grows, tearing each member of the family apart.
Rowley Irlam added that the team did not want The Battle of Gullet to become a Battle of the Bastards 2, or Hardhome 2, or Spoils of War 2 - famous battles in the Game of Thrones series that "made waves" on the small screen with their grandeur. "Our ambition is to create a bigger and better battle, but importantly, not to repeat ourselves," Rowley Irlam shared.
Dragons is the next hit series adapted from George RR Martin's books, after Game of Thrones . Each episode of Dragons averages 29 million views in the US, becoming the most-watched series when it debuted on HBO in the US. Season 2 is expected to air in 2024.
