At around 0:58 a.m. on May 13, a fire broke out on the 6th floor of The Alcove Hotel (Nguyen Dinh Chinh Street, Ward 8, Phu Nhuan District, Ho Chi Minh City). Upon discovering the fire, the hotel security guard shouted for the hotel guests to escape and used a mini fire extinguisher to approach and put out the fire.

The 6th floor area is where guests eat and relax. It contains a bar and many flammable items, creating suffocating black smoke. The fire spread quickly and the security guards could not control it.
The Phu Nhuan District Fire Prevention and Fighting Team, the Fire Prevention and Fighting Police Department, and Ho Chi Minh City Police mobilized vehicles and dozens of officers and soldiers to the scene to put out the fire. The fire was on the top floor of the hotel, making access difficult.

The firefighting teams approached the scene and broke many layers of glass doors to let the smoke escape. The firefighting reconnaissance team went deep into the fire to rescue 4 people trapped inside to safety. After a short time, the fire was controlled. At the scene, burnt electric wires fell into the dense fire area, many decorative items on the 6th floor, tables, chairs, and electronic equipment were burned and severely damaged.
It is known that the 6-storey hotel has an area of about 200m2. Initial determination of the cause of the fire was an electrical short circuit.
