Three scientists won the 2025 Nobel Prize in Medicine.
Mary E. Brunkow (born 1961) is currently a Senior Program Manager at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, USA. She received her PhD from Princeton University;
Fred Ramsdell (born 1960) is a scientific advisor at the biotechnology company Sonoma Biotherapeutics, USA. He received his PhD from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1987;
Professor Shimon Sakaguchi (born 1951), is currently a professor at the Center for Advanced Research in Immunology, Osaka University, Japan. He is considered the "father" of regulatory T cell research.
The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is worth 11 million Swedish krona (equivalent to nearly 1.2 million USD or 30.8 billion VND), divided equally among the winners.
The significance of the research work of 3 scientists
According to the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute (Sweden), the work of these three scientists has identified regulatory T cells, which act as "protectors", helping to prevent the immune system from attacking its own body.
Understanding and controlling the activity of regulatory T cells offers great hope for medicine. According to the Nobel Assembly, their work has opened up new research directions, creating the basis for therapies to treat cancer, autoimmune diseases and increase the success of organ transplants.
Several therapies based on these discoveries have entered clinical trials, offering hope for treating or curing autoimmune diseases and improving cancer treatment.
