During the COVID-19 years, the Pulitzer Prizes have been bestowed on journalists and news organizations who have sacrificed their lives during the pandemic. In 2022, alongside COVID, the war in Ukraine dominated headlines around the world. That’s why “Ukraine Journalists” won a special Pulitzer Prize.

This year, the Pulitzer Prizes will be announced at 3:00 p.m. local time on Monday (May 8) at the main campus at Columbia University, USA. Journalists and news organizations with the potential to win or be finalists for the Pulitzer will include those whose outstanding work addresses major topics in the US and around the world.

This year, more than 2,000 entries were submitted to the organizers and were divided equally among 14 journalism categories and 7 writing-related arts categories (music, drama, poetry, history, fiction, biography and fantasy).

Regarding the 107th Pulitzer Prize, awards administrator Marjorie Miller noted that in recent years “we have always received a lot of articles around the big stories of the year — a terrorist attack, a war, a pandemic, an election.”

Still, Miller acknowledged that this year's big contenders will be journalism and art that deals with “the war in Ukraine, the Supreme Court and abortion, mass shootings,” and of course a number of other topics.

The Pulitzer Prize winners are determined by an 18-member Pulitzer jury. The jury first draws up a shortlist for each prize category – usually three nominees. The jury members then make the final decision on the winner.

Based on some prior information, critics can somewhat predict the winners each year. However, there are often many surprises and secrets about the awards. Therefore, predicting the individuals or organizations that will win the Pulitzer Prize this year is still not an easy task.

The Pulitzer Prizes are named after their founder, Joseph Pulitzer, who was the editor of the New York World and left the prize in his will when he died in 1911. At that time, Pulitzer only proposed 13 prizes: 4 for journalism, 4 for literature, 4 for theater, and 1 for education.

The Pulitzer Prize then created an advisory board and changed the content of the award, which has now increased to 14 journalism categories and 7 art categories. Currently, each Pulitzer Prize is worth $15,000 (before 2017 it was $10,000) and comes with a medal.
