Relieving family stress during exam season.

June is the peak month for university entrance exams nationwide. Currently, millions of families are entering a stressful "final stretch" – from dropping off and picking up children from extra classes and registering for university applications to ensuring proper nutrition for students during exam season…

Conflict arises from differing viewpoints.

From the beginning of April 2026, Ms. My Tam's family (living on Duong Quang Ham Street, An Nhon Ward, Ho Chi Minh City) completely changed their daily routines. Previously, Ms. Tam's eldest son, Hoang Thinh, a 9th-grade student at Vo Truong Toan Secondary School (Saigon Ward, Ho Chi Minh City), rode his bicycle to school every day. After school, Thinh attended extra classes in Math and English three evenings a week at a nearby tutoring center. The classes ended at 7 PM, and Thinh would ride his bicycle home, shower, eat, and then study. However, for the past two weeks, due to the increased workload and Ms. Tam's concern for her son's fatigue and safety while commuting, she and her husband have been taking turns driving him home each evening. Their previously relaxed family dinners have been replaced with quick meals at restaurants on the way home, allowing them to dedicate all their time to exam preparation.

“There were days when both my husband and I worked night shifts, and Thinh's father suggested using a ride-hailing service to take our son home, but I was worried about his safety. Because of this, we often argued due to differing opinions. I think the closer it gets to the exam day, the more careful we need to be because all the results of nine years of studying are culminating in one exam. No matter how busy I am, I want to personally drive him to and from school to ensure his safety,” said Ms. My Tam.

Unlike Ms. My Tam, Mr. Hoang Tung's family (a sales employee in Cho Quan ward, Ho Chi Minh City) has been tense for weeks due to their inability to reach a consensus on choosing a university major for their child. Mr. Tung recounted that although they had already decided on two subjects for the high school graduation exam – English and Physics – the numerous university admission combinations based on these two subjects have caused conflict within the family. His daughter wants to study communications, his wife wants her to pursue education, while he wants her to study economics . Furthermore, given the significant differences in university tuition fees, choosing which university to include in the application process has led to days of heated arguments. The situation reached a breaking point during dinner when his daughter tearfully asked, "Should I study or should you and Mom study?" Afterward, she went into her room and closed the door. The couple remained in the living room, each burdened with their own worries and anxieties. Mr. Tung fears his daughter will struggle financially in the future, while his wife hopes she will have a stable life with less pressure.

“Every educational choice involves many variables. Each person's future life has many twists and turns, and success or failure cannot be determined solely by the results of a single exam. Students and their families should remain calm, avoid excessive stress, and focus on doing their best,” shared Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu, Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School (Ben Thanh Ward, Ho Chi Minh City).

Respect your child's choices.

Mr. Dinh Phu Cuong, Principal of Nguyen Van Luong Secondary School (Binh Phu Ward, Ho Chi Minh City), suggested that in the period leading up to the exam, students need to ensure they eat and rest adequately to maintain stable health. During the day, they have already received review sessions and knowledge systematization from their teachers at school. In addition to school, most students in their final year of secondary school now attend extra classes to consolidate their knowledge. Therefore, the evening after returning home is a time for them to review their lessons in a relaxed manner, combined with proper relaxation and rest. During this period, parents should support and remind their children to allocate their time wisely, and not to overexert themselves at the crucial moment.

From another perspective, according to the Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, Truong Hai Thanh, after the reorganization of administrative boundaries, the scale of schools in Ho Chi Minh City has expanded, creating many learning and employment opportunities for students in the area. Education experts all agree that this is both an opportunity and a challenge, as the increasing number of choices can easily lead to confusion and disorientation for learners. Therefore, families need to play a supportive role, helping their children calmly filter information and make learning choices that suit their actual abilities, strengths, and family's economic conditions. During discussions, parents can offer suggestions but should not impose their opinions, respecting their children's choices while teaching them to take responsibility for their decisions.
