Here, Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre Lazare Eloundou Assomo expressed his joy at having the opportunity to return to Vietnam for the second time, in the context of UNESCO and Vietnam building a model of close cooperation. This is even more meaningful when our country is a member of the World Heritage Committee, consisting of 21 members, whose task is to discuss and make decisions on the inscription of UNESCO world heritages.
“My second visit to Vietnam reflects that the cooperation between the two sides in the field of world heritage is going very well. We need to regularly review, evaluate the work and give advice and recommendations during the process of Vietnam's heritage conservation,” Mr. Lazare Eloundou Assomo emphasized.
Assessing Vietnam's major challenges in preserving, maintaining and effectively promoting heritage values, the UNESCO representative said that UNESCO highly appreciated Vietnam's efforts in putting people at the center of heritage conservation work, while emphasizing the need to harmonize between preserving cultural values and developing social life.
According to Mr. Lazare Eloundou Assomo, Vietnam and UNESCO are coordinating on many important projects and tasks, including a plan to restore all historical relics of Thang Long Imperial Citadel, the ancient capital of our country, to better understand the long-standing traditional history of feudal dynasties.
“I would like to encourage the Vietnamese people to continue to support the preservation and protection of cultural and natural heritage, which are testaments to Vietnam’s history and culture. I think it is very important to honor those values, because heritage preservation contributes to the well-being of the people, to the development of the country, and Vietnam is a typical example,” the Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre affirmed.
