Pope Francis condemns killing of children in Gaza

On the flight back to Rome from Singapore, Pope Francis expressed skepticism that neither Israel nor Hamas, after 11 months of war, had any intention of ending the conflict.

The Pope told journalists that he regularly calls members of a Catholic parish in Gaza and hears about "evil and difficult" things.

“When you see the bodies of children being killed, when you see a school being bombed just because of the assumption that there are militants there, that is evil,” he said.

During the 40-minute press conference, Pope Francis also stressed the need for a ceasefire and demanded the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas, while expressing concern about the severity of the war.

The Israeli war in Gaza has now killed more than 41,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, women and children, and forced much of the territory's population to flee their homes and live in a severe humanitarian crisis.

Pope Francis has denied reports that he will travel to Paris to attend the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in December, leaving open the possibility of a future visit to his native Argentina.

Pope Francis also stressed his concern for the migrant issue, especially in the Canary Islands, where increasing numbers of migrants are arriving in Europe by sea.
