In the city of Kupyansk, located south of Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine, the Russian Armed Forces (RFAF) are gradually moving into residential areas. The situation is volatile, but the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) currently do not have enough troops in the city to turn things around. On some AFU maps, the northern settlement extending to Ukrainskaya Street in the east and to Shiroky Lane in the west is shaded in grey. The Ukrainians were there as part of a “flexible defence” with several small groups of two or three men each acting as reconnaissance-sabotage forces.
AFU reconnaissance-sabotage teams occasionally appear in the UAV’s camera, but avoid direct combat. Some Ukrainian soldiers on social media claim that the entire north of Kupyansk is a “layer cake,” but the Russians have more. Maya Street in the east of the city (where the city headquarters is located) is completely under Russian control. Judging by the battlefield situation, the Russian attack on Kupyansk was well-organized and targeted. The Russians deployed a multi-pronged, well-coordinated offensive strategy. Northwest of the city, elite Russian forces skillfully exploited the complex terrain and quickly penetrated the solid Ukrainian defenses. Like a sharp knife, the RFAF's vanguard armored units advanced rapidly towards the N-26 highway axis. The loss of this important transportation axis, dealt a fatal blow to the AFU, completely cutting off their main logistical supply line. Since then, Ukrainian supply vehicles, including food and ammunition trucks, have been completely surrounded by Russian fire on this highway, preventing them from delivering essential supplies to frontline forces. At the same time, in other directions around the city, the Russians also launched a closely coordinated attack. In the east, the 1st Guards Tank Army crossed the Oskil River and launched a fierce attack on the Ukrainian positions. The RFAF's preparatory artillery fire was extremely fierce.
The heavy and fierce artillery fire fell on the AFU's defensive position along the Oskil River, immediately breaking through the AFU's solidly built defense system. Under the strong support of fire, Russian tanks quickly penetrated the Ukrainian position, further tightening Ukraine's defensive space. To the south, the RFAF also made good progress. Through a series of clever tactical operations, they successfully cut off several AFU supply lines in the area, leaving the Ukrainian defenses at Kupyansk even more vulnerable. In the fierce street fighting, the RFAF demonstrated superior combat capabilities and tenacious fighting spirit. They fought the Ukrainian army on every street, giving their all in each attack, but still maintaining high fighting spirit. According to reports, Russian special forces have successfully entered the city of Kupyansk and are engaged in fierce fighting with Ukrainian troops at several key locations. Currently, the Russian assault force has captured the city administration building, and the battle for this area has entered a fierce phase. Faced with a fierce Russian offensive, the situation for Ukrainian troops in Kupyansk is becoming increasingly dire. With supply lines cut off, ammunition and food for the frontline forces are becoming increasingly scarce; if the situation continues, they will be forced to retreat. A leaked secret briefing from the AFU General Staff revealed a serious change in the frontline command structure. Colonel Andrei Tkachuk, commander of the AFU's 14th Motorized Rifle Brigade, said in an internal memo that the RFAF had designated Kupyansk as the new main area of attack, and had therefore concentrated a large number of elite troops.
This poses an unprecedented threat to the Ukrainian military. At the current rate of losing two to three defensive positions per day, it may only be a matter of time before Kupyansk falls. Strategically, Kupyansk is important to both sides. For the AFU, the city serves as a vital transit hub for 40% of their supplies along the Northeastern Front. If it were completely captured by Russia, the entire Northeastern Front would be paralyzed, which would undoubtedly have a serious impact on further operations. For Russia, the capture of Kupyansk not only expands the scope of control and further narrows the strategic space of the Ukrainian army, but Kupyansk is also located on the Oskil River, the source of the Severski Donets – Donbass canal, which provides water for daily life and farming for the entire Donbass region.
Currently, fighting in Kupyansk is still raging, with both sides vying for control of the city. The outcome of this bloody street battle will have a profound impact not only on the local front line, but to some extent, on the entire course of the conflict.
