Teacher asks parents for money to buy personal computer, causing outrage

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí28/09/2024

On the morning of September 28, speaking with Dan Tri reporter, Mr. Le Cong Minh - Principal of Chuong Duong Primary School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) - said that the school had learned of the incident where parents reported that a teacher asked parents of students to donate money to buy a personal computer.

"Currently, the school is dealing with this matter. The school is making a report to the Departmentof Education and Training and the People's Committee of District 1," said Mr. Minh.

Ask parents for financial support to buy a personal computer

According to the parents' initial feedback, during the parent-teacher meeting on September 14, Ms. TPH - the homeroom teacher of a class in grade 4 - suggested that parents support her with money to buy a laptop (personal computer), because her computer had just been lost.

Some parents calculated and offered to support the teacher to buy a computer costing 5-6 million VND/unit. Parents in the class agreed that whoever could afford it would pay this amount, not equalizing and not forcing everyone to pay.

At the meeting on September 14, some parents paid the fund to the class's parent representative committee, then the representative committee transferred the money to teacher H. to keep. The remaining parents transferred the money directly to the homeroom teacher.

At noon of the same day, Ms. H. sent a message to the class's zalo group with the following content: "After the first meeting of the school year, 29 parents contributed to the fund. Currently, I have 14.5 million VND. I gave the nanny 300,000 VND. I contributed 500,000 VND to the scholarship fund. I have 13.7 million VND. I bought a laptop, I will inform the parents of the remaining amount. And I would like to ask for this laptop too, parents."

Teacher H. also took pictures of the two computers with a price quote of 5.5 million VND for the gray one and 11 million VND for the black one. At the same time, she texted the parents that she would take the black one because it loaded data quickly, and asked the parents to support 6 million VND, and she would compensate with 5 million VND.

On September 16, Ms. H. continued to text the parents of class 4/3 with the following content: "On Saturday (September 14), I asked the parents to support the laptop with about 5 to 6 million VND, and I bought the laptop for 11 million VND, so I will compensate with 5 million VND, and this laptop is mine. Do you agree?"

Along with the above message, Ms. H. created a vote on Zalo to agree/disagree for parents to vote. Notably, when a parent expressed disagreement, Ms. H. immediately asked which child's parent it was and then locked the vote.

A parent who did not agree to support the teacher to buy a computer was immediately asked which student's parent he was (Screenshot).

Then, Ms. H. texted, saying that 26 parents agreed, 3 parents disagreed, and 9 parents had no opinion.

"If any parent does not agree, I will not accept it. I bought it myself and used it myself. I also bought the printer myself. I do not accept anything from you. I sincerely thank you," Ms. H. texted.

Stop writing class outlines

The incident continued when on September 17, this teacher texted the parents again with the content: "Last night and this morning, I received many messages and phone calls from parents begging me to accept the class's support. I would like to make clear my point of view that I do not accept it, parents. And I also do not have to prepare review outlines for the children. I agree on the review lesson and parents review on their own...".

After the parents could not agree on supporting the money to buy a computer, Ms. H. texted that she would not prepare review outlines for the students (Screenshot).

However, on September 24, Ms. H. sent a copy of the expenses after receiving money from the parents. The copy still recorded the amount of 6 million VND for the computer and 2 million VND for the speakers. A parent in the class disagreed because she thought that these expenses must have the consent of all the parents in the class. After that, Ms. H. deleted the amount of money for the computer and speakers.

According to parents' feedback, since the incident of unsuccessful requests for support to buy computers, students told their parents about the teacher's poor teaching attitude in class.

Faced with this situation, some parents in the class signed a petition to change the homeroom teacher or transfer their children to another class. Parents also reported to the school and relevant authorities to find the best solution for their children.

The incident is currently being investigated and resolved by the authorities.
