DTO - With the desire to help students in rural areas accumulate more knowledge before entering the new school year, since the end of June 2025, volunteer students from universities in and outside the province have organized summer classes for students in some communes and wards in the province. Not only a place to review knowledge, these classes also bring a positive learning atmosphere, practice life skills and create a useful playground for students during the summer.

Special summer classes
Regardless of age, grade or class, about 40 students from primary to secondary school in Doc Binh Kieu commune participated in 2 special summer classes at Tan Kieu Secondary School (Doc Binh Kieu commune, Dong Thap province). It is worth noting that the teachers are not professional teachers, but volunteer students from Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance. The classes take place from Monday to Friday every week, from July 17 to August 1, 2025, by a team of 20 volunteer students. Here, students are systematized with basic knowledge of English and Information Technology, and are also trained in writing - practical content that helps them consolidate their foundation and prepare well for the new school year.
Starting from 7:30 every morning, many parents take their children to attend summer classes at Tan Kieu Secondary School. The morning atmosphere is bustling, the students' faces are filled with excitement waiting for class time, to meet their friends and volunteer students. In the warm atmosphere of the classroom, the students listen attentively to every lecture. Basic knowledge about vocabulary, tenses in English, IT skills, especially getting acquainted with the ChatGPT tool are presented vividly and closely by the students. During recess, students also participate in life skills education activities. Many practical skills are enthusiastically instructed by volunteer students, contributing to equipping them with self-protection skills in daily life.
With the motto "Learning while playing", the goal of the summer classes taught by students of the University of Economics and Finance of Ho Chi Minh City is to bring students a comfortable and joyful learning atmosphere and support them to consolidate their knowledge and develop their skills naturally. Student Le Luong Hong Tham - University of Economics and Finance of Ho Chi Minh City, participating in the Summer Volunteer Student Teaching Team at Tan Kieu Secondary School, shared: "We take turns teaching in class. Along with reviewing basic knowledge, we also guide students to get acquainted with Canva design software, ChatGPT tool; learn English vocabulary according to topics such as: family, nature, weather and basic tenses in English. In addition, implementing games integrating life skills helps students identify and avoid dangers in daily life".
At Cao Lanh 1 High School (My Tho Commune), for over 2 weeks, a team of 30 volunteer students from Dong Thap University has been teaching Math and Informatics to many students in difficult circumstances or students with weak knowledge of Math and Informatics. The "blue shirt tutors" enthusiastically guide and tutor each student to consolidate basic knowledge of Math, while also systematizing theory and practicing skills in doing exercises for students. For Informatics, volunteer students teach students how to use software to design posters, book covers, cards and review office computer skills.
While instructing students of Cao Lanh 1 High School to do math exercises, Mr. Nguyen Hoai Tam - a student of the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Technology, Dong Thap University, shared: “This is the third time I have participated in free summer teaching activities for students. I feel very happy to participate in this meaningful activity. Although the time of each class is very short, we always try to impart the knowledge we have learned to students. When students understand the lesson or design a poster, I feel very happy and joyful. I hope that through this teaching activity, students will have more knowledge and confidence to enter the new school year.”

Bringing a meaningful summer
The lively and exciting atmosphere has been spreading in the free summer classes as many students participate in a fun and rewarding learning environment. With a proactive spirit, students come to class not only to learn knowledge but also to have an interesting experience.
Student Luong Thanh Nhat Lam, a student at Tan Kieu Secondary School, shared: “This is the second time I have attended a summer class. Coming to the class, I was taught many new vocabulary words, how to use tenses in English, write sentences with correct grammar... This new school year, I am in 8th grade, learning English is quite important to me, so I proactively attended the class to review my knowledge. I am very happy and excited to attend this class.”
Summer classes are also a valuable source of spiritual encouragement, helping students confidently enter the new school year. Nguyen Ngoc Gia Han, a student at Tan Kieu 1 Primary School, said: “I am about to enter grade 3. I heard from my homeroom teacher that there was a free class at school, so I came to attend. The class is very fun and comfortable, I get to meet friends and learn English vocabulary. In addition, I also get to play fun games, I like it very much.” Nguyen Thi Ngoc Mai - a student at Cao Lanh 1 High School, excitedly said: “This summer is a very important time for me, because I am in grade 12 in the new school year. When the seniors and seniors opened a class to teach Math and IT at school, I immediately joined. In class, I was guided to review the theory of Math for grade 11, practice solving exercises and learn how to use poster design software. Thanks to this class, I have accumulated more knowledge and skills to do Math exercises and have a more solid foundation to prepare for the final year of school.”
With the spirit of volunteerism, the volunteer students enthusiastically imparted knowledge to students. Student Le Luong Hong Tham - Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance, shared: “Through the lessons, the Volunteer Student Team hopes to create opportunities for students in rural areas to access information technology, improve their English and practice life skills, which will be essential provisions for them in the new school year. Not only bringing knowledge to students, the summer volunteer days in Dong Thap also helped me gain more valuable experiences and become more mature.”
Summer classes also bring peace of mind to many parents during the summer. Ms. Pham Thi Thuy Phuong (39 years old), residing in Doc Binh Kieu commune, confided: “I am busy with family matters so I have little time to teach my children. This is the second year my child has attended this summer class. Thanks to the class, my child can review his knowledge, not forget his lessons during the summer break and avoid playing games or watching his phone. I feel very secure.”
Mr. Tran Thanh Nam - Secretary of Doc Binh Kieu Commune Youth Union, said: “Every summer, the Commune Youth Union regularly organizes life skills education activities, popularizes swimming, especially coordinates with volunteer student teams of universities in Ho Chi Minh City to maintain summer classes at Tan Kieu Secondary School. This is an activity in the annual Green Summer Campaign. Every year, we open 1-2 classes, this summer alone, we opened 2 classes with about 40 students participating. Through the classes, students will have a joyful and meaningful summer, contributing to preventing injuries and drowning during the summer.”
As for Dong Thap University, in the 2025 Green Summer Campaign, the School Youth Union organized 3 volunteer teams including students from the Faculty of Mathematics - Information Technology and the Faculty of Foreign Languages to teach Mathematics, Information Technology, English, Chinese, and practice beautiful handwriting for students at Cao Lanh 1 High School (My Tho Commune), and students of primary schools in Cao Lanh Ward. Teaching and learning will be organized from the end of June 2025 and will end at the end of July 2025. This is an activity within the annual Green Summer Campaign launched by the School Youth Union in communes and wards in the province. The activity has been maintained for the past 20 years, not only supporting students in reviewing knowledge but also helping students have the opportunity to interact with students, practice skills, and how to handle pedagogical situations to better serve their future teaching work.
