REMEMBER UNCLE HO'S TEACHINGS ABOUT THE SEA
With strategic thinking and a vision beyond the times in exploiting the potential and value of the sea and ocean, in March 1961, when visiting the Navy officers and soldiers for the second time, President
Ho Chi Minh taught: "In the past, we only had night and forest. Today, we have day, sky, and sea. Our coastline is long and beautiful, we must know how to preserve it...".
Uncle Ho's advice is not only an order for the entire Party, the entire people, and the entire army, but also a "compass" in the actions of Navy soldiers today. The sacred sea and islands are not only
sovereignty , but also a living space and a living environment that needs to be preserved and protected sustainably.
Vietnam's sea area is about 1 million km², 3 times the land area, and has a particularly important position and role in the cause of building and protecting the Fatherland today. However, the East Sea in general and our country's sea in particular are facing serious challenges, such as plastic waste pollution, climate change, and resource depletion...

Officers and soldiers of Regiment 251 join hands to protect the environment of Vung Tau beach. |
Naval Region 2 is a force that regularly operates and comes into contact with the marine environment, from river ports, seaports, long-distance ships to DK1 platforms in the middle of the ocean. For each officer and soldier here, maintaining hygiene and protecting the environment is extremely important, becoming a voluntary task of each person.
The "100 Dong House" model is one of the typical initiatives being effectively implemented in units of Navy Region 2. After training, preserving, maintaining equipment, increasing production, and
sports , officers and soldiers will collect and classify garbage. Particularly, recyclable plastic waste such as bottles, jars, plastic boxes... will be put into the "100 Dong House". Small actions, great meaning - the movement against plastic waste does not stop at protecting the environment but also has the meaning of practicing thrift, fighting waste, and is a beautiful cultural behavior of soldiers.
Senior Lieutenant Truong Huu Phat, Deputy Secretary of the Youth Union of the Training Center, said: "The implementation of the "100 Dong House" model is not only meaningful in terms of environmental protection, creating a green - clean - beautiful landscape for the unit, but also creates revenue for the activities of the branches and especially raises environmental protection awareness for soldiers."
STRICT WASTE TREATMENT AT SEA
During long-term missions at sea, waste classification and treatment are strictly carried out according to standard procedures. Each ship has a separate waste collection area including: Organic waste is treated by natural decomposition or composting, absolutely not discharged into the sea; inorganic waste is collected, classified and brought to shore for centralized treatment; hazardous waste is stored in specialized tanks and handed over to specialized treatment units.

The model "100 Dong House" is actively implemented by union members and soldiers at the Training Center. |
Captain Nguyen Tuan Anh, Political Commissar of Ship 953, Brigade 167, affirmed: "We have thoroughly grasped and implemented waste treatment plans before the ship left the port. During the performance of the mission, officers and soldiers always raise awareness, classify waste, and handle it according to the correct procedures, absolutely no littering at sea."
On the DK1 platforms in the middle of the ocean, officers and soldiers still maintain the routine of sorting garbage, saving water and fuel to the maximum. The platforms have been equipped with solar panels - a clean and sustainable energy source. Rainwater is fully utilized and vegetables are grown in improved foam boxes, contributing to reducing waste.
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Trung Duc, Party Secretary and Political Commissar of Battalion DK1, shared: "We classify and compost organic waste to make fertilizer for growing vegetables. Solid waste is stored in sorting bins. When full, it will be put into packaging and stored, waiting for the ship to bring it back to the mainland for processing. Absolutely do not dump waste into the sea."
Not stopping there, units of Naval Region 2 always accompany the community, join hands to clean the coast through the programs "Volunteer Saturday", "Green Sunday", "Clean the coast - Preserve the blue sea" movement. Tons of floating waste are collected, returning clean and beautiful landscapes to tourist areas and beaches, contributing to raising public awareness of the marine environment.
JOIN HANDS TO KEEP THE SEA BLUE, ACCOMPANYING FISHERMEN
The sea area managed by Naval Region 2 covers an area of over 300,000 km², stretching from South Binh Thuan to Ca Mau, where many traditional fishing grounds are located, closely linked to the livelihoods of millions of fishermen. However, the situation of IUU (illegal, unreported, unregulated) fishing and the risk of being "red carded" by the EU have posed huge challenges to the fisheries industry.
 |
Naval Region 2 is active in coordinating propaganda and dissemination of laws to fishermen. |
Faced with this situation, Naval Region 2 has stepped up propaganda activities for fishermen on the Fisheries Law, Vietnam's Law of the Sea, international commitments and recommendations of the EC. At fishing ports, moorings, and offshore fishing vessels, Navy officers and soldiers always accompany, stick together, listen, share and support fishermen.
The program "Vietnam Navy as a support for fishermen to go offshore" is one of the important highlights. The Naval Region 2 Command has closely coordinated with 7 Departments of Agriculture and Environment, directly the Fisheries Sub-Departments and the support of the Border Guards of Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Binh Thuan, Tien Giang, Tra Vinh, Ben Tre, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu provinces. The activities of accompanying and supporting fishermen have gone into depth, contributing to the close connection between the law enforcement forces at sea and fishermen.
At fishing ports, moorings, seafood markets or on ships sailing far from shore, the Navy not only propagates, distributes documents, and disseminates laws but also directly listens to the thoughts and aspirations of the people. The combination of legal information and support for free medical examination, giving away national flags, life jackets, fishing gear, etc. has created deep trust, building a solid position of people's hearts at sea - the foundation for long-term and sustainable protection of national sovereignty.
Colonel Do Hong Duyen, Deputy Political Commissar of Naval Region 2, said: "Not only regularly propagating and helping fishermen, officers and soldiers of Naval Region 2 also always accompany and share difficulties with people to solve problems in order to effectively implement Directive 45 of the Prime Minister on combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. Because violations not only greatly affect the marine environment, causing long-term harm to aquatic resources but also affect the livelihoods of millions of fishermen who are closely associated with the sea profession."
Protecting the marine environment is not only a duty but also an order from the heart of every Navy soldier. The silent but practical actions of officers and soldiers of Naval Region 2 are contributing to preserving the "blue ocean" - the precious and sacred living space of the country. From creative models to accompanying fishermen, all demonstrate the high sense of responsibility of the Navy for a sustainable blue sea.
