Gmail fights year-end spam wave with AI
Gmail fights spam effectively with AI
Thanks to artificial intelligence (AI), the number of phishing emails reaching Gmail users' inboxes has decreased by 35% compared to the same period last year, according to Google senior product manager Andy Wen.
The secret sauce is new AI models, specifically a large language model (LLM) that is trained specifically on phishing, malware, and spam. This model helps Gmail block 20% more spam and process 1,000 times more user-reported spam every day.
In addition to implementing a system to combat spam and phishing, Google also shared warnings to users about three common scams during this year's holiday season.
The first is the trick of sending fake invoices, aiming to lure users to call to dispute and defraud them of money. Next is the form of impersonating celebrities or exploiting their images for advertising. Finally, users will receive emails threatening physical harm or spreading false rumors about the user.
To protect themselves, Google recommends that users be cautious with suspicious emails, carefully check the sender's information, do not transfer money to strangers, and report scam emails. Now, with the powerful help of AI, Gmail is becoming more and more secure, helping users feel secure against the widespread scams in the digital environment.
